Roads?

It appears the roads have no function in the game? Now that I think of it, I cannot remember them being mentioned in the manual.

There are two regions adjacent to Savannah. One has a road running from Savannah, and one does not. I noticed that starting from the Savannah region, if I move a unit into the neighboring region with no road, it takes my force exactly the same amount of time to march there (14 days) as it does to move into the region that does have a road.

Roads are in the game and reduce the move cost. Take the Carolina 76 scenario.

At Savannah takes the militia. The region with the road costs 16 days, the one without 18.
Now check with the same unit the cost to enter the Dismal Swamp, new Willmington. with road 10 days, without 30 !

It seems the road bonus is pretty small. Most of the time, it only seems to speed movement by 2-3 days, even over a full 30 day trip. In fact, the road bonus is so small, that I have noticed instances where the army prefers to ignore the roads completely when moving from region to region, even when it would appear that taking the roads are the fastest way to go.

the road bonus is indeed often small, because the roads are accross cultivated regions for the most part, so foot infantry don't benefit much. Things can be different if you have a track accross a forest and move artillery thru it. Also muddy weather reduce the interest of roads.

You have to take into account: nature of terrain, weather, movement type of the unit.
