Fort assaults

I notice that an army with an assault command will assault over and over again during the month long turn. When unsuccessful, this can easily lead to the total destruction of the assaulting force. This seems somewhat unreasonable. What commander would attack over and over again at any odds until every man is dead?

Would it make more sense for an army with an assault command to attempt ONE assault, and if the attempt is unsuccessful, to stop assaulting for the turn?

Not necessarly unrealistic, as an assault can results in a stalemate, as only a few troops (3-4 regiments) can participate in the fight. History is full of account of multi days assaults.

Also, we get a problem with armies wanting to take over a string of structure (empty or weakly defended) on their path.

edit: in case of failure (not an undecided fight but a fight where the assaulter is beaten), the army should revert to defensive posture

I would think so, unless the assaulting general is a suicidal lunatic.
