==============================================================================
Birth of America update 1.09 readme
Wednesday, July 26, 2006
==============================================================================

This update is mostly aimed at further improving the AI (nicknamed Athena). Enjoy what she has learned!

==============================================================================
Bugs fixes
==============================================================================
This update has no bug fixes.

==============================================================================
User interface
==============================================================================
- Intermediate movement messages have been filtered out from the message panel unless you are in Error Logging mode.
- AGESettings (the utility in the main game folder) proposes 4 different windows modes: Fullscreen, maximized mode (this is the standard and optimized one), windowed mode with border (resolution of your choice), windowed borderless mode (resolution of your choice). Users with dual screens can try the last mode. These new modes are experimental.

==============================================================================
Gameplay, rules additions and changes
==============================================================================
- A lone leader never suffers from harsh winter casualties.
- The naval blockade rule has been revised. You need 2 SOL (Ship Of the Line) squadrons to blockade any given sea. In order to determine which seas need to be blockaded to shut down a harbor, just pass the mouse over the harbor icon. If an enemy fort with artillery is adjacent to the sea, the required number is 4 SOL squadrons. If one of the attacker's (manned) forts is adjacent to the enemy harbor, only one squadron is required. If you both have a fort, you still need 2 squadrons. Reminder: blockading a harbor will prevent the besieged units from resuppling by sea.
- Retreats from a thawing river will be made toward the region with the highest military control.
- Fleets which are blocked in a frozen river can't bombard.
- Irregulars can now recapture cities if the region's loyalty is 51% or more (liberty!).
- Artillery bonus for siege roll is revised: every 30 combat points gives +1 (or -1 if you are defending), with fractions used for a random roll. If you suffer from a command penalty, then the adjusted combat points are used.

==============================================================================
AI
==============================================================================
- Sped up AI thinking by roughly 30-40%.
- Improved the long range mission behavior.
- Improved the unit gathering behavior ("garbage collector" for units).
- Light units can now be sent to recon if needed (new).
- Light units are now called by big stacks to maximize the detection rating of said stacks (new).
- irregulars (rangers, indians, partisans) can now be sent on raids with appropriate leaders and stealthy mode (new).
- Depot will now be built if a need for one persists in a given area (new).
- Resupplying of units has been improved.
- Sieging forces will be more aggressive if they can afford the assault.
- Besieged forces will be more aggressive if they can afford the sortie.
- Units bound to an area will be better used.
- Major update on the naval AI algorithms.
- Naval AI will be better at blockading enemy harbors.
- Various adjustements of parameters for a better decision process.

Can this patch be applied to the demo?

by Pocus
no, the demo is set in 1.08 for now. We will try to update it but not before the end of the month.

1.09c patch is up. Same link as the current one, but with the missing Display.opt file that gave some problems to users who moved several BOA versions at once.

You can re-apply this patch to your current version of BoA w/o problems.

1.09 e quickfix is up, it corrects 5 bugs (bombardment bug, error during AI generation, etc.)

http://ageoddl.telechargement.fr/BoA109e-quickfix.zip

This is a quickfix (a single file), meaning you have to sweat a bit to install it ;)

1 - The archive (ZIP) can only work on 1.09c or 1.09d. It contains the main executable, BOA.exe and only this file.

2 - You have to find the previous one, generally c:\program files\birth of america\boa.exe

3 - Replace BOA.exe with the one of the archive. You have now upgraded to 1.09e.

Do we need this if we already did the 1.09e quick fix?

no, unless you want very minute improvements, like the army names written on 2 lines on the armies tabs, etc.

That will be a yes then. :niark:

Aye.

there is some improvements, but I won't list them officially, as they are for the 1.10 patch official announcement. Like for example that all leaders are now sorted by seniority in the army panel (and not just the commander first and others somehow randomly), etc.
Feel free to apply this patch on top on any other version, it should works.

Scrolling on new PC

Hi Pocus, I downloaded the new patch at the same time I set up a new PC.
The game works fine but the scrolling doesn't seem to work very well when going up and down. I'm sure I had this before but I can't remember the fix.
Is it possible to turn windows mode off and go into full screen mode? I think that might be the problem.

I tried to change the mouse in the settings program but that made it worse (can't scroll down at all)

EDIT: I think this is a problem with the mouse I need to fix. I get the game cursor and the mouse cursor at the same time. Getting a new mouse next week so I will see how it goes.

Thanks, Chris

wow, its a new PC are you saying? Perhaps you should check what is the frame rate you reach (there is a link to the utility in the Armory forum, "how to speed up BOA" thread. On a new PC you should get at least 250 to 300 FPS with such utility.

About the mouse, you can switch to hardware, it allows the mouse a better response time.

About the screen res, try to switch full screen with a resolution of 1280x1024 maximum, higher resolutions are rather demanding (although I play BOA on 1600x1200, with a good frame rate and a PC 3 years old).

Minute improvements can be a good thing. Especially when it applies to a game that is already great to begin with! Regardless, thank you for the continued support. :sourcil:

Just an FYI, the DL link to the patch is currently broken in the official BoA site (I'm sure it'll be fixed shortly).

OK thanks Pocus, I'll give it a go tomorrow. One strange thing with the settings program - I see the tick boxes but no writing to describe what
they are for.

Cheers, Chris

Pocus I gave the utility a go and the frame rate is around 1350. I think the fact that I have 2 cursors is a little strange. I think it is probably a set up problem with the new PC - I'll have a play around with it and get back to you if I can't sort it out. I noticed a similar thing in another game.

How do you get into full screen mode?
Cheers, Chris

Hi again,

I uploaded again 1.09e, there was a problem with a localization file which prevented seeing all strings in the AGESettings utility.

(re-apply the patch on top of any version)

In the settings, second tab, there is the option to go full screen. Select and then in the drop bow that appears, select a resolution. For a starter, if the PC react slowly, choose 1024, then up progressively (you have to run the game to see the frame rate)

Frame Rate: you seek 25 FPS. In BOA, Main Menu, Options window, there is the tab system. Activate full debug/ error logging. Some additional display will appears in red to the left of the screen. There is the FPS (Frame Per Second).

nb: FPS is limited to 25 on purpose, it does'nt means that your PC can't do more ;)

Hi Pocus, I downloaded the file again. Now I can see the text. I chose Fullscreen and scrolling works fine now.

You may want to change the settings .exe code - when it comes up it seems you have to enter your serial number when you actually don't - you can just hit the display tab - this is not obvious and it's a pain to have to look for the key before you realise that it's not necessary.

(OK I'm an idiot - but there may be others like me :)

a very valid suggestion, I will change the code on that.

I'll join the ranks, Hobbes. I opened that app a few times before I realized it wasn't necessary to enter the serial #.

@Pocus: Be careful how accommodating you become. People will get spoiled and come to expect this level of excellent service. ;)

Handled by TFR, the 3rd party company which handle our downloads. They have big nasty servers up 365/365 (normally...).

the new current link is:

http://ageoddl.telechargement.fr/BoA_patch1.09f.exe

(version 1.09e is still on the server though).

Version f fix a bug with the message panel and another one where you would not be able to destroy forts.

Hi
I am using 1.09f and I have noticed 2 things missing
1) The small square denoting a garrison in a city. That was a very useful thing, now I have to check every city looking for garrisons or going through the entire OOB
2) The icons explanation on the leader icons, now I have to check the manual for the explanation
I guess these useful things could bve easily included again, since they were in previous versions

2. I had same problem.

(all inclusive)

Fix the absence of explainations for leaders abilities in the leader tooltip.

The calculation of the overall combat values of units has been refined (this is an estimate on how powerful the unit is, but is not actually used in combat, it is used by the AI though). This allow the AI to be less reckless.

Note: this patch has not been tested by the betas. Play with it at your own risks (you can always revert to a previous patch anyway).
