Symantics: Patch vs. Update

You're doing yourself a disservice by using the word "patch" versus "update". You've gotten most bugs early and are mostly adding and enhancing things.

"Patch" has a negative connotation in that patches fix things that are broken. I've seen many developers get slammed unfairly because people say "Look, he's had 8 major patches! See how buggy the game is!" when, in fact, the developer is just giving free added value.

Just friendly advice.

I don't know, My initial reaction to a "patch 1.09" wouldn't be "Geez, nine patches already, this game must suck!", but rather "Geez, that game was released so long time ago, and they still support it!"

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but in my opinion honesty is the best policy, therefore, as long as it fixes a single bug, call it a patch, not an "update" or even worse an "enhancement pack" like certain other developers nowadays do... :tournepas

I mean, AGEOD isn't George Orwells Ministry of Truth, and PT isn't The Big Brother, is he? :8o: :niark:

Ah, yes, but you're not a flamer. I'm just pointing out how we can take a little fuel from the flamers.

As I said, just friendly advice.

I asked myself the question sometime ago. ;)

I've been think the same thing as Biz. Some people who only casually glance at BOA may think that it must be a buggy mess since it has needed so many patches. This would be a horrible shame since it would create a completely unrealistic view of the situation. Hopefully, anyone who has an interest in BOA will at least read the boards enough to get a true picture of this fine game.

I can certinaly see both sides here. The casual PC gamer will certinaly look at a game having eight patches and wonder at what a mess that it is. But someone who plays a lot of games from the smaller companies like you guys, Paradox, Matrix, and Battlefront will realize that they really ARE updates, when things are being added. Well, Paradox games are VERY buggy at first, so the first few patches really ARE patches, and then they start updates. ;) Matrix is'nt quite as bad, although it does apply to the first two. Still, AGEOD is just following the naming tradition -- regardless of what a update does, everyone still calls it a patch.

New material and/or content = update

Fix problem with current material and/or content = patch

Doing both = update?

I'd just stick with making the best game you can and not worry about the rest. That is what will have the more significant impact. The fact that you also support a game and interact with the community is also more significant than what you call the resulting changes to the game.
