Stack entrenchment values

Tue Jul 15, 2008 5:27 pm

Hi,

Was just curious as to the reasoning behind stack entrenchment values when merging/unmerging with another stack while in the same region.

Ie. I can have a stack with level 4 entrenchment that I drag onto a newly arrived stack and all entrenchment is lost. Why is that? Firstly it is daft if you drag them the wrong way by mistake (rather than merging the new arrival into the old) as I have done several times!

Secondly, why can newly arrived units merge and instantly gain level whatever entrenchments - even a single subunit stack can have level 4 for example and a whole division merges with it and gains instant fortifications at level 4?

Also, how do these entrenchments suddenly disappear? Why can't a unit arriving a month later simply occupy them if we presume units tend to gather near cities etc within the regions? Surely a more sensible way would be for a 'permanent' fortification value to get attached to a region that gradually decays over time if not used/ maintained by sufficient numbers of men, still limited by the yearly maximum fort levels now implemented.

I appreciate a more flexible system would perhaps be difficult to manage/program but currently it makes little sense to me that fortifications can be instantly gained/lost in such a manner.

yes I've raised this before, but I've discovered that the current system is about as good as it gets. a way to deal with this....SOMEWHAT gamey, but certainly plausible....is to keep at least ONE garrison unit in every region you wish to keep entrenched....to sort of "hold" those entrenchments in place.

I believe the ability for larger formations to assume trenches already "occupied" by smaller militia garrisons is completely believable within the context that instead of actually "occupying" those trenches...the militia have just constantly been digging them during the absence of the main army. You saw this a lot historically....slaves, garrisons, anyone with a shovel would prepare fortifications around a city prior to an army every occupying them.

Hope that helps

Entrenchment code will be improved sometime in 2008, for VGN and immediately impacted on AACW.

exactly how do you tell the entrenchment value? I can tell the different entrenchments at the bottom of the icon with the barricade, but I can't tell what level it is.

Hi
Is one of the icons on the upper right corner of the Units panel, by the supply, amunition etc.
If the force has no entrenchemnt there will be no icon there. If he has any, a white icon with a zigzaging line will appear and the tooltip over it will tell you how many levels (form 1 to 8).

On the battle report each of this level equals 100 points of entrenchement value.
Regards!

Also, when looking at entrenched enemy units...look in the upper left corner of their stack...

a little graphic will either show a little guy hiding behind a trench...or a cannon hiding behind a trench.

The cannon means he's level 5+
