Colored Troops

Fri Nov 02, 2007 1:49 am

In the game colored troops cost slightly more than equivalent white troops; $23k vs $22k. Why should this be? Colored troops might have gotten equal pay and equal equipment, they might have gotten worse, they certainly did not get better pay and better equipment than whites.

Colored troops have exactly the same stats as other heavy line infantry. A strong argument can be made that Colored troops had higher morale and higher assault value. Because they cared a lot more about the slavery issue and they expected to receive no quarter from the Confederates.

My guess would be that african-americans made up a relatively small percentage of the North's population. Smaller the population base the wider (and more expensive) the recruiting needed to form regiments/brigades. If the colored troops are supposed to represent slaves freed under the EP that enlist, it would represent the difficulties associated w/ forming regiments/brigades from scattered areas (eg. transportation charges, etc.).

A good answer, except its not right.

The white population of the North was 90% rural and agricultural, the black population was almost the opposite.
