I'm curious as to why it is always destroyed.

Is this supposed to reflect guerilla activity by Baltimore based Confederate sympathizers?...or is there something else involved?

...and speaking of railroads...

Why are the AI Feds so lax about repairing their destroyed railsystems?

I'm reluctant to destroy railroads because it seems to have very little effect on northern transportation,no matteer how extensive the damage, and I just have to rebuild at a great cost in loss time when I invade.

(Guess I would be asking that about Confederates if I ever played from the Union perspective... ...like that'll ever happen.)

At the start of the war, it was difficult to rail troops into Washington because the rail line went through Baltimore where, to boot, the troops had to detrain, march through the city, and entrain again at the far end, because the lines did not connect. Since Rebel sympathies were high in Baltimore, this presented problems, with troops being harrassed by crowds and even some fighting. One of the reasons why martial law was first used in MD, to ensure safe communication with the national capital. I always assumed the "destroyed" rail link was to represent this. But, just use the next best militia to repair it ... doesn't even need martial law.

Hey speaking of that...does anyone know where I could pickup Shelby Foote's books on the Civil War...after reading a few exerpts the other day online...I'm very interested to read more.

Also, just before Lincoln came to Washington, some pro-Confederate Marylanders did indeed rip up the tracks north of Baltimore. They were less than pleased at Mr. Lincoln's election. The same folks actually assaulted the first batch of Union troops from Massachusetts on their way to Washington and got all shot up when the troops decided they'd had enough!

lol....well I would hope my avatar would be a dead giveaway. Missouri. So I'm sure if i popped into the local "Barnes and Noble" I'd probably find them.

Wonderful!! I wish I could afford them. Had an occassion to meet Mr. Foote to discuss the battle of Shiloh, on which he was THE expert. One of my ancestors was killed in the Hornet's Nest fighting for CSA. A wonderful experience talking to Mr. Foote. I was born and raised in Memphis; we had a statute of Gen Forrest! He was a local hero and should have been. If he had caught Grierson ... He would have wiped him out!! T

Forrest is buried in Memphis as is Shelby Foote. In fact Foote is buried next to the Forrest Family plot in Elmwood Cemetery, where General Forrest was orignally laid to rest. Forrest was moved in 1904 to Forrest Park, a Memphis park named in his honour.

The used book store in Bend ,Oregon has no less than 4 copies. So if an out of the way place like that has 4, then any civilized area that has a used book store might possibly have a copyor two on the shelf.

I bought my 3 volume hardback edition (which I think are better anyway) from Barnes and Noble for ~ $13 a piece. You will find them in the Bargain section up front.
