Fatal Years

Sat Mar 01, 2014 3:23 pm

Hello all,

I wanted to start a new game of RUS in the coming days with the Fatal Years mod.
Does anyone know where I can find the latest version? Clovis website is down and I do not seem to be able to find it anywhere. Never tested it before, but I heard that it enhances the vanilla game quite a bit?

You can download the mod here: box.net/static/flash/box_explorer.swf?widgetHash=vzghyg7v70&cl=0

There is a bug though that can lead to a crash sometime in 1918 (or maybe 1919, I've forgotten), and I've previously fixed it - unfortunately I'll only have access to my computer where I have the fix in a week or so, but I did send it to anjou, so if he still has it and sees this thread, maybe he could be so kind as to upload it. Generally the mod seems to work though from my experience, but has the odd crash or issue here, which is of course to be expected as it is/was an ongoing work in progress. However it's still interesting to take a look at at least once and it shows that it's a labor of love. Guess it's the right time to try it out now before RUS GOLD is released!

Hello Owl,

Thank you very much for the files!
It would be of course great to get the fix, as I do not want to start a game, which is sure to crash at a certain date. So I hope anjou might see this thread. Otherwise I will gladly wait a week, if you would be so kind to provide me with the fix then :)

Thanks here also. Looks interesting. I am curious if it works with the latest patch version of RUS?

You're welcome, both of you! I'll be uploading the files as soon as possible. The latest version of the mod was from late 2012, but the latest Quick Fix is from 2013. Nevertheless, when I played it, I installed the mod over a version of the game with the latest QF and it worked, so yes, it seems to be quite compatible.

As promised, here's the file in a zip. It goes into the RUS\Events folder of your FY installation, overwriting the existing one. Enjoy!

Thank you very much, Owl!

Going to start a new game tomorrow. I plan to go with the Reds as I already played the other two. Never with FY of course, so I guess I am up to a tough challenge :)

Reposting here in case you haven't seen it yet in the mods forum. I've cleaned up the last version of FY. Mainly localization checks and clarifying events and rules. I also did the following

- Lowered Factory construction for Whites just by 3 EP
- Decreased the RED NM loss for losing the Volga during 1918 from 7 -> 5

Would like to add that I plugged Fatal Years into my existing RUS using the Generic Mod Enabler rather than in an entirely separate RUS installation and it seems to run just fine.

I have not yet had the opportunity to play to a conclusion but so far it seems a most impressive effort. Thanks to all involved.

For those unfamiliar with JSGME see the post for using it to manage mods in WW1G here:

I started slowly playing it against the AI as the Russians. It is interesting. Definitely different.

There are some very good ideas in Fatal Years. I hope we see some included in RUS Gold.

And I wondered if it was my imagination but battle results seemed slightly different. Did some digging in the model, unit and terrain files and discovered that units are inflicting less cohesion damage per hit. Which means units have more staying power. I think it is an interesting change that slows down the pace of combat a bit. For this late time frame (early 20th century vs say ACW, ROP or Rome) when battles may last for weeks instead of entire campaigns resolved in a day or two battle, it is an appropriate change.

Still in the first year of the campaign but nicely impressed so far. If anyone wants to try something different to hold them over till RUS Gold, Fatal Years is pretty good with intriguing ideas. Different feel from the original campaign.

Correct, Jagger. There have been times in my campaigns when major battles took a month to resolve. Giving both sides time to rush in reinforcements.

If somebody by chance have this mod in your hard drive please upload it somewhere and post a link. I'd like to use some ideas from mod with gold version.

Both Clovis and anjou are long gone, so I guess there is no problem uploading it.

Credits to the authors, specially to Clovis.

This is v1.09 redux, that AFAIK was the last one, after anjou modified v1.085 by Clovis.

Thank you again!

From memory, I was using this with a pre-RUS - Gold install - I assume it can't possibly work with the Gold version?

Yes it can't, Clovis was finally against base RUS (why he exhiled to FY), moreover against Gold where he was no involved at all and he would say Gold and their devs are #@&% as usual when he disagree with somebody (so I think I am right to say that Ageod invited him to exhile by himself, heavy insults being not tolerated).

Thanks for letting me know ERISS - I do recall the background story, but I wasn't quite sure on the timeline any more. I tend to play Gold these days, but some of the ideas in Fatal Years were no doubt interesting. Ah well.

Cheers!

That maybe unfortunate bad language if that happened but I always think Clovis had a creative side in old Ageod engine. I followed his blog and beta test his version in pbem with 3 players in the past. Although any game is a history now apart from Field of Glory: Empires. Combined effort would be very good in the past in the old engine. His AI was very good and well scripted.

That's not the fault of others if he couldn't combine in the end. He even made others to leave, such as JastaV, GrayLensman

His AI was very good and well scripted.

That's the good reverse of his illness: immature with high ego want to play with themself, so they prefer to play against a good AI of theirs.

I've remembered GrayLensman: He corrected me about location Tuscon or whatever it is called not very friendly.. Ok I may have spell wrong, not native language big fault ;)

I don't know the others well.
