Of Stacks, Orders and Movement

In my game against MT I have a nice entrenched garrison in Annapolis, and Banks 3+ entrenched outside, filled to the limit but not over with elements, power = 450; he was in usual defensive mode. In the same region was the Rebel General Johnston, besieging Annapolis, power of ~ 700. With resolution of the move, Banks moved out of the region without orders and with out a fight.

Why would that be??

The game checks for retreat before each battle. The only way to keep your troops there is to have the red "hold at all costs" button pressed. If not, the engine looks at certain factors (mostly power), and then decides if they need to retreat (you got a bad "roll", and the number checked was for your troops to retreat).

You can check your logs, and see what happened (it would be the log labeled something like !Battlelog.txt)

MT and I started with the new patch; with the old iteration (and his prowess/my ignorance he knifed through to Annapolis/Baltimore and cut off Washington; then he assaulted it and won.

Lessons:

1. Do not abuse command and control; more elements do not mean more power. Quite an eye opener to watch the power of a stack grow as elements are removed.
2. Do not over-crowd cities; there are clues in the unit info box which can't be ignored.
3. Do not play with the original release version - the South is way over-powered.
4. Create diversions - we have rebooted with the new version - I captured Savannah and am now ravaging Florida in summer 1861. These are threats which can't be ignored.
