When do militia disband?

Mon May 02, 2011 3:17 am

Some militia disband in "Early January", however when in the turn do they disband?

For example, if I ordered an assault on a city in "Late December", do the assaulting forces face a soon-to-be disbanded militia or does the militia disband before my forces attack?

I have never noticed militia simply disbanding.

I have lost them to lack of supply, even in towns that lacked enough supply, especially in winter but I have never noticed them ending their enlistments and going home.

I believe it is at the start of the turn (before day 1). But I am not 100% sure about that.

In January, if they are going to disband, they do it at the beginning of the month. Term up, Jan 1st.

In my current PBEM game against Sedgwick, some militia units disbanded in Early January 1862:

Buffalo Militia, Delaware State Militia, California Militia, NY State Guard disbanded

IIRC each January turn some militia units may disband. Jim-NC answered my question, but he's 'not sure' (did I see you in the movie Idiocracy?).

Yellowhammer,
No you did not see me there. I do not remember attacking a militia that disbanded, so can not tell you for sure if they will still be there during the fight. IIRC, they are listed in the messages before anything that happends on day 1 (which also leads me to believe they disband before day 1).

Gray,
These are the auto-raised Militia. Some of them disband in early Jan. Same with auto-raised partisans.

...they gradually convert via specific events into conscript infantry.

This is true in most cases, but some of them converted quite rapidly into elite infantry. Some of the militia called up in January 62 were already infantry by the time they reached full strength!

Jim-NC - I hope you saw the movie, else you might be offended (none intended).

I've gotten that message. "Newark militia has been disbanded." I've checked the point concerned - zippo, no other unit(s) there.

* Always very rear area units.

* Always mid to late game.

* AFAIK, always locked.

* Usually have a lot of units on the board by then.

Always as Union, which I usually play - not enough time with CSA to know.

Not only have I seen militia units disband, partisan units also disband (spontaneously, not just because of combat or lack of supply!). However, I've also noticed that "locked" militia units become "unlocked" around the same time, so check all those forgotten garrisons where militia were raised once upon a time!
