Charles (CSA) vs. Meagher (Union) 1863

Sat Aug 11, 2012 8:37 pm

Hi there everyone, welcome to my 3rd AAR. This AAR will be a little outside of the norm because we are starting with the 1863 campaign. I’m (Charles) the CSA and Meagher is the Union. I wanted to give the 1863 campaign a go as I’ve never gone down that road. It’s an interesting idea starting off in a historical position in the middle of the war. The challenge will be large for the CSA as it certainly was in history. In addition, Newman5 and I will be making a video AAR of this. You can check out the introduction post https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBps8-Y5xnk

Newman won’t be giving advice, but we thought it would be fun to comment on the game together as it progresses and talk about the historical situations. Please subscribe in Youtube and follow the war. I will also do the standard writing and pictures here! The settings are:
Players: Charles-CSA, Meagher-Union

1.16a Quickfix2
Fog of war: Yes
Activation: medium
Randomized Generals: No
Naval box handling: standard
Redeployment: 1 per turn
Delayed commitment: medium
Foreign entry: normal
Historical attrition: on
House rules: none since we are already in 1863.

Late March 63 - Texas, Arakansas, Louisana

The situation starts of rather dire for the CSA in the west. Texas is still in CSA control, but Missouri is long gone, Arkansas is threatened by a large army from General Curtis. New Orleans, the jewel of the south was captured in 1862 and Port Hudson is now threatened.

Hey, thanks for doing a new AAR. Yours are always fascinating. Thanks to Newman5 for his expertise in video replay, also.
Looking forward to your game.

As far as the politics go. I'm choosing to blockade. For recruitment, 1 marine unit, 2 sharpshooter units, 1 brig, and 1 militia unit in VA. 50 RR and 15 rivery transport. Note we have no WS left and this is a big problem to do much of anything.

The CSA have plenty of money and conscripts....., but very little WS. All WS is being spent on RR and River transport, which are currently zero!

Jeez Charles! I noticed that according to your forum posts, you must be playing three PBEMs at once. Very impressive. I'm still working on the AAR I plan to do for our own game.

And do you usually play as the Union or Confederacy? It seems that you are pretty skilled as either one. It would be interesting to find out who has played the most number of games at once; I imagine four is quite near the top!

It is about 50 50. I think it the future, 2 games at a time is the most I would do no matter how much time I have. It sort of gets confusing to know exactly what is happenign in each game.

Interesting choice of PBEM scenario. CSA is beyond salvation against a skilled opponent in 63.

Good luck Charles, you are gonna need it, I am rooting for the South.

His MS campaign has been brillant so far..... Yes, tough task. However, it is interesting starting off in a different setup.

It's looking grim for the CSA. The Union is hitting us all over and we are nearly starving in TN and have supply shortages in VA coming. What is worse, the NC supply line is now disrupted and Moblie barely holds. We have no WS..... Here are the pics. We will need Lee and Jackson to pull out some great victories the next turn to turn the tide.

There you have it. It was pretty close in Norfolk...... I didn't show it, but I'm beginning to move the army of TN back to Chatanooga as they are beginning to starve.... Sigh....

Sort of the same situation. Big supply problems all over and substantially outnumbered by the Union..... again all over. It will be intersting to see if the Union's MS force runs into any serious supply troubles. And of course, what will the Union do in NC and VA.

Richmond is under siege. Hoke and Ewell are wiped out in Virginia. Vicksburg is also under siege.

You have to congratulate Meagher. He did a perfect execution. This is a textbook example: How to quickly overpower an opponent with limited resources.

Early August 63 is up. For some reason the audio stopped working just a few seconds in.... And we already ran the turn. Basically, Longstreet loses Fredericksburg despite causing the Union 10,000 losses. The capital is moved to Atlanta. The Union prepares for the final attack, I think!

Lee wins in NC... But at what cost? Mobile is lost as 50,000 boys in blue hit it. Vicksburg and Richmond are still under siege.
