Obviously, with everything going General James Longstreet's way, I was totally shocked and crushed by this event.

OUCH!

Of ALL generals out there, the one who is your favourite was the one to die!

Imagine how Lee felt when Jackson died...

The hustle and bustle of Christmas has caused me to fall a bit behind in the timeline I gave awhile ago. The Christmas newspaper will drop this evening, Eastern time. Merry Christmas! God Bless us everyone. :D

P.S. - This issue has a few really nice columns from Richmond newpapers in 1861. Do you think that first one was really an accident?

This is even better then fof AAR! And as you said earlier it really sounds as alternate history. Perhaps you could even publish it.
Anyway, if you ever decide to do pbem AAR I am volunteering to play against you. Even though athena is great, playing against human is where ageod game shows its full potential.
Keep up the great and amazing job you are doing.
Forrest said something about killing a Yankee for each of his horses that they shot. In the last days of the war, Forrest had killed 30 of the enemy and had 30 horses shot from under him. In a brief but savage conflict, a Yankee soldier "saw glory for himself" with an opportunity to kill the famous Confederate General... Forrest killed the fellow. Making 31 Yankees personally killed, and 30 horses lost...

He remarked, "I ended the war a horse ahead."

I appreciate you kind words regarding my AAR... I have never played anything other than solo in any of the wargames I own. I love the solo experience, and at this time am not ready to go PBEM, but I thank you for the offer. I will definitely give it some more thought though. :)

I believe I made the mistake of not leaving my naval force in Cape Girardeau in the attack mode, but instead put them in a defensive stance. There were more than 7 Confederate ships there. Doesn't that constitute a blockade or do they have to be in the attack stance? Anyway, it has added spice to the story ;)

You need 8 elements to blockade a water zone, plus or minus 4 depending on forts. If you have a complete blockade, stance shouldn't matter; otherwise, you need to be in attack mode.

what does exactly the blockade do?
is it reducing the money produced by the blocked city?
thx

I think you are using the term "blockade" incorrectly in this situation. Having 7 or 8 or 20 ships in a river area will not stop other ships from sailing by. A blockade effects the land adjacent to the water area. For example, having 12 naval units next to Richmond "blockades" it. This effects the amount of money/CS/WS you get each turn. But those ships do not stop CSA ships from sailing out of Richmond and down the James River. To stop ships, your ships must be in offensive or assault posture. And even then, there is a chance you will engage (it is not automatic). If your ships are in defensive posture, then they do not start combat. And if both fleets are defensive, then no battle. So to stop uniion ships from getting past your fleet, keep them offensive. You must be prepared for a cohesion hit each turn you are "at sea" however. Which means your ships will have to put into port earlier than if they are defensive.
Remember - The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Ok. Makes sense. What I really need is two fleets in the area.
One blockading Cairo, in attack mode, and the other recovering in Paducah.
That way I can alternate them. :niark:

Alternately, you could put a force with artillery there. Once it gets to entrenchment 5, it will blast all passing ships. This may be even more devilish: rather than let the force live somewhere else, it continues to its target, but cut up by artillery. Then it can be finished off by a division or so.

So, what I really need to do it capture Cairo.
I've tried that unsuccessfully, and am pretty concerned about a growing Federal army in Bowling Green, Kentucky which is lead by U.S. Grant. I am trying to build a wall of defense along the Tennessee - Kentucky border because of it. So I'm hesitant to transfer too many troops west to initiate an offensive on Cairo. But, it looks like I need to take a chance here. I'm about two months ahead of the newspaper issues that I have released, so it will be at least Fall before I can do it. I may not be able to do it, I fear, before winter kicks in. :siffle:
