Commanded and fought against Indians in the Trans- Mississippi theatre as well as confederate guerillas.He brought much of the Indian territory under control and defeated the confederates at Prairie Grove. While transferring his command he was ambushed by Quantrill's guerillas who were wearing union uniforms. 90 out of the 100 men in his escort were killed. He was removed from command after that but returned and performed well against Price's Missoui raid.
