Very long load time?

Thu Mar 19, 2009 6:55 pm

I'm running AACW on a laptop and when I first played the tutorials a year or so ago it ran fine. Recently I decided to get back into it, applied the latest patch and now from the time I click the icon to the time I get to the main menu, it takes an extremely long time. It's "Loading Textures", "Loading Engine", "Loading Data" for 6.5 minutes. I have 1 Gig of RAM, 2GHz processor. Everything else seems to be fine. Are others experiencing this?

I have played with 1 GB of RAM (on a faster PC, PIV 2.8) and it took a while, but not as much. Maybe 3 or 4 minutes.
Have you tried to uncheck the load textures at initialization option??
It should make the loading shorter, but i suppose it will take longer to start the scenario. Check if it's better for you
Maybe you Hard disc is too fragmented, or something like this

A trick i use (not to speed up loading time, but to make it less boring) is to alt tab while the game loads and do anything else (like reading this forum ;) )
At least on my PC, AACW alt-tabs flawlessly while loading and playing :coeurs:

Interesting. I'll have to try that. I can't alt-tab while playing, only from the main menu. Haven't tried while loading.

In my pc, Defragment and touch some of the textures in the game, and I'm much faster

For me it works both with the windows key and Alt+tab.
And while playing too!
I must say AGEOD are one of the more stable and fast responding games to alt+tabbing in my computer (windows XP).
It's a very nice feature! :coeurs:

I'll try the Windows key. Thanks for the tip. If I alt-tab while playing, I get a split-second glimpse of the desktop before instnatly returning to the game. I was thinking maybe I don't have enough free memory, or whatever the appropriate techie term is.

Not an expert on these things, but I upgraded from 1 gig RAM to 4 and I noticed a HUGE difference in load speed.

Thanks guys. I'll try a defrag, though I usually only use the laptop on vacation, so it doesn't get a lot of use. As long as there's a reason for it!

Old, slow PC guy here - the machine not me :) .

I had increased RAM to 1.5 gigs but the game still loaded and scrolled sloooow. Then I increased the size of the paging file and the game loads faster and scrolls faster. And when I quit the game, it unloaded much faster. Also made the tweaks in the system option as suggested above. Mine is not a gaming rig, so I milk it for what it is worth.

Hope this is of help to someone with an older machine.
