Marines and Sailors

I haven't played in a while and this is my first time with the 1.14c patch. Can someone refresh me on what advantage sailors and marines offer?

Faster river crossing. Marines are the best attacking infantry.

Is there any bonus or penalty for using them to storm forts? Particularly the ones on islands? Also does the bonus apply for just the stack they are in or does it apply to any force attackinf from the same territory into the same territory?

Hi!
There is no other special bonus besides what enf91 states.
The river crossing bonus is just for the stack they are in.
