The October issue of Strategy & Tactics magazine has a 16 page article on the "Third System Forts" used for coastal defense in the Civil War. A very informative piece.

I don't think my library carries that journal, sadly. For what it is worth, there is a nice webpage dedicated to cataloging North American forts, for those interested.
