It seems to me that the marines have used their best snipers available and therefore got the merchant ship captain free. Our military have only one problem that our politicians who are on top cannot decide so quick because they think always about what our public opinion will say afterwards.
But congratulations from me for this action.Pirates and terrorist should have and get no chance nor choice but to give up...

greetings

They should not even be given the chance to give up either. Just take them out right there on the spot. They would not hesitate to do the same to anyone else under similar circumstances.

What happens when they're taken prisoner? They get to stay under detention for awhile then they get released to resume the same activities? That makes no sense and is a great risk to our service personnel who have to take greater risks to take them prisoner. It used to be the law of the sea to execute pirates directly when captured. I think our ancestors had it right back then.

While i am very happy about the release of the captain, i find it sad that nobody seems to wonder why these guys (fishermen) are doing it. :(

The world isn't just black and white.

Exactly the pirates are pirates not because they are very bad boys but because
European, japanes and other countries boats are fishing in their coast and finishing with the fish. The need to live and perhaps to be pirates is the only way.

I really don't feel the need or the desire to try to search for an explanation for the unlawful practices of these pirates. I will take a guess though and assume that the lure of much more money from piracy than from honest fishing might be at least one cause. Sometimes the world is simply black and white.

The French resistance during WW2 was a terrorist organization. The world is not black and white.

Resistance and terrorism are different things, and the difference seems easy to make IMO.
Resistance : striking military objectives to weaken the ennemy military machine and aiming to a military victory.
Terrorism : striking civil population in order to spread terror and to weaken this population's will to fight (or to make it change its country policy). There is also a variation : terrorism without any clear political objective : just kill those who are not supporting you, kill as many as you can.

The difference seems quite easy to make, and I don't understand why some medias are trying to assimilate both. To me, it is not innocent.

The French resistance, as an example, only aimed military objectives, structures with military purpose (railroads, bridges) or military people. The only civil they aimed (like Radio Paris french speaker) were openly supporting collaboration and german military effort.

To make it simple, the French resistance never put a bomb in a bus, in a restaurant, it never aimed any german civilian. If it was a "terrorist" organisation, its purpose would have been to kill as many german civilian as possible, with no consideration of their activity (and this would have been possible according to the large number of French civilians or war prisonners working in Germany)

... But all this is obviously off-topic

Continuing this off-topic thread (and before it gets locked :D ), let me give my 2 cents:

1. Congratulations to the US troops that achieved the liberation of the pirates' prisioner. Great news to anyone that loves freedom.

2. Sorry, but I have to voice my complete disagreement to some previous posts that imply support to death penalty for pirates. My beliefs mandate me to say that I am against death penalty, period. Of course, I respect other people's opinions...

The world is certainly not black and white on most matters, but some matters are of a more definite shade. I guess anyone can claim that any organization or person is a terrorist or that no action is unjustified. Everything is relative so there is no wrong in the world and all actions have some legitimacy. I don't subscribe to that view.

The pirates are certainly living in a difficult part of the world and in a difficult situation, as are many people in the world. The pirates have simply chosen to diminish their own misfortune by imposing it on others. Thankfully, most people choose another path.

I agree with both these points. I'm glad the captain was rescued, but it's sad that people had to die. But that's the way it goes, I suppose.

Though an interesting discussion, both the philosophical and more mundane aspects of it, it will have to take place elsewhere than these here forums.

"Current politics" isn't a can of worms we want to open hereabouts ;)
