For a general study, it's hard to beat The King's War 1641-1647 by CV Wedgwood. It's dated, 1st published in 1958, but very readable and still one or the best overall histories.

For a study in depth of the 1st big battle, try Edgehill 1642, by Peter Young.

For military history: try J Adair, By the Sword Divided (1997) and M Ashley, The English Civil War (1990.)

A good place to start is to find a uni online source packet, with the required reading material, Keele university in tyhe uk for example, or a mil college tha tcovers the time period your interested in. Carl, combined arms research library in the usa,for instance will have master thesis that cover the ecw, along with much other interesting stuff, online for free downloads.

Osprey Publications has a short introduction to the war, The English Civil Wars 1642–1651 by Peter Gaunt.

Just finished, A Military History of the English Civil War by Wanklyn and Jones, 2005.

A clear, sparse and concise account; I'd suggest moving this one up to the top of your reading list.

Anything by Christopher Hill or Brian Manning are worth reading even though their books are getting quite old now. More recent is a book by John Rees on the Levellers that I will be purchasing shortly . . .

Just finished The English Civil War: A Military History by Peter Gaunt, 2014. Its a good read, well written and full of interesting snips and pieces from primary sources.

The books only fault, I believe, is that the overall military picture is sometimes submerged in a mass of other information.

Thus, the war's frame is blurred at times and picking up a clear and concise picture of how, when and where the elements fit together is more work then it should be.

Still, all in all, Gaunt's book is well worth reading and a excellent addition to my library.

I can recommend the BBC series about the subject:

As well as Simon Shama's 2 episodes of the subject:
