City Flags

Wed Nov 09, 2016 10:34 am

We will work with the artist to re-design / create the city flags. Most likely they will not be animated, as a vast majority is against it.

We need to get accurate sources for those flags, so feel free to post here flags for the various nations, asap :gardavou:

Thanks

England AND Scotland:

Image

This flag was in use from 1606 and is slightly different from the modern flag that was adopted in 1801.

The flags with the cross of St. George (England) and St. Andrews (Scotland) seem to be modern affectations.

The Union flag is actually a combination of those two flags, with St. George overlaying St. Andrews.

If absolutely neccessary for game purposes I can imagine Scotland using St. Andrews (when, for example, they might be in revolt and trying to dissolve the Union), but I don't think it would ever be appropriate for towns in England or Ireland to fly the cross of St. George (except during the Middle Ages). The same holds true for national control markers (the coats of arms).

Brandenburg:

The crown above the head of the eagle in both this and the Prussian flag should be an electoral cap and not a crown.

(The ruler of Brandenburg was one of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Empire).

However, they're very similar looking at a distance, and given the small size of the flags no one will be able to tell the difference.

Electoral caps (as opposed to crowns) look like this:

Duchy of Milan:

Image

This is one of the few square flags that I can think of. The other one is Switzerland, which is always (and incorrectly) shown as a rectangle.

The flag of the Duchy of Milan should not be confused with the flag of the city of Milan (a red cross on a white field).

Can someone kindly remind me what minor edits I have to make to stop the animated flags which I find very distracting (a bit like those jumping emojis too).

I think there was a settings file that you edit the flag speed in.

Thanks

Thanks. Will try to check what I have stored.

Also what image format/size you would prefer for sources?

Any size, the bigger the better. Format does not matter, it will be sent as sources to the artist.

The Swiss, Dutch (United Provinces), Danish and Swedish flags all date from before the time of WoS and so their modern flags can be used,

We won't redo flags now, unless someone has special artistic talent to reporduce them, because the artist contract and tasks are over.

We have ceased to implement them since too many players were complaining about them.

Now it could be done, but would require a graphical artist to do them all... :niark:
