2nd Week of September, 1914

Objectives

Austria must have lost a battle. It's NM went down a little and Russia went up. My wasted turn in Poland didn't help.

3rd Week of September, 1914 Planning

Paris

Schlieffen didn't really want to take Paris. He wanted to circumvent it, but the plan was flawed because of the lack of troops. Not even 20 more divisions would enable Germany to sweep through and around Paris as his plan called for.

I can continue the meat grinder of Paris. I will have a troop advantage. Or I can stop and start the defensive lines forming right next to Paris along the Seine. Nice Major river to defend and preserve my troops. Such a choice now. One means high losses and possible victory but also disaster and serious weakness. The other is safe and will provide a strong defensive position for the remainder of the war or until the Hindenburg line is formed up.

Hmmmm.......

3rd Week of September, 1914 Results

Western Front

I continued the push on Paris. Largest battle of the war so far took place with heavy casualties on both sides. Though the Germans carried the day, no army remains on Paris. Everyone bugged out. OHL and 6th Army have both breached Longwy and Nancy. The newly formed 10th Army attacked the French Reserves in Maubeuge. The beat up German 3rd Army retreated to San Quentin to get some reinforcements and help protect the supply lines. The German 5th Army pushed down from Sedan. This next turn will determine if Paris holds or if I have to retreat. My munition trains are getting thin and replacing at Lille, Brussels and Leige. I have one more turn to not only stay on Paris but also to have 4 munition train elements in order to use the bombard fort regional card.

The battle for Paris. 1st Army led the attack, supported by 4th and 2nd Armies.

And the 10th Army pushed on Maubeuge.

3rd Week of September, 1914 Results

Eastern Front

The Russians retreated to Warsaw and more Russian troops are in route to Poland. Lodz is in German hands. A key rail line into Poland is still cut but the other major line has been repaired, so supplies should start flowing in. 8th Army will have to hold for the 9th Army before the attack on Warsaw begins.

3rd Week of September, 1914 Results

Objectives

Looks like NM stayed pretty static this turn. Germany gained 2. I'm not sure how to interpret this. Under lost men, I'm seeing 225k losses for France and 145k losses for Britain to my 400k losses. However, looking under prisoners. That's showing another 530k worth of French and British prisoners of war.

Where to go from here.

Altaris, very good mod. Schleiffen was achievable. I was able to do this because the French player misjudged the threat and didn't do what the French did historically, which is leave skeleton forces along the forts and put everything into defense of Paris.

Paris is very defendable. Covered by a major river on all sides except the side I already own. At this point, I'm expecting counter attacks against Paris and will continue to solidify the seine and marne river defenses. Both British and French armies are badly beaten up.

Here's a view of how defendable Paris is.

No idea if taking Paris means end of war or not. We'll see. France took quite a drop in NM.

And if anyone is reading this....

It has been decided to continue with the game. The Entente have refused our offer of surrender.

What happened due to the Fall of Paris is:
- Italy, Rumania and Turkey swung 20% towards the CP
- French NM went down significantly

Italy is at 76% towards CP. Our ambassadors now have a 76% chance to swing Italy towards the CP each turn. After 70%, there's an automatic 1% shift towards CP. For the remainder of this year, we will most likely get a 2% swing each turn. In 1915, there's options the Entente can play to swing Italy back towards them, but best case for Entente right now is that Italy will be out of the war for a long time. Worst case, they align with the CP.

Rumania is at 70% and our ambassadors have a 70% chance to swing Rumania towards CP. 1 more point, and the auto 1% each turn kicks in. The only thing that will slow them down towards CP alignment is when Turkey comes into the war. They don't like Turkey.

Turkey is now at 90%. Not a good thing really, as their entrance will slow down Bulgaria and Rumania. But there's nothing we can do about it. An automatic 1% shift each turn means they will be in the war around January or February 1915.

These seem like fairly reasonable results if Paris were to have fallen. France is still in the war, and probably would've still fought IRL too, but it would've been a severe blow to morale and to political pull for the Entente.

Glad you're enjoying it, I've found the historical western attack to be achievable as well if the French player doesn't respond quickly enough, but it's tough to pull off with the limited German forces if they take too many losses on the way. That's why the French 5th and BEF armies are so important to slow down the German advance and keep them on their toes once they get into France proper.

Yes, France has to throw almost everything at Paris in order to stop the Germans. it helps if the Germans don't waste time with Amien and focus the attack on San Quentin and into Paris.

I agree with the result. Italy was a fence sitter in WW1. They would have come in on the side they thought was winning. Rumania did come in the war on CP side. So this doesn't surprise. Rumania often aligns with Entente in base game, which surprises me. I understand that their entrance on the CP side was a surprise, but it should probably be better reflected (surprise or not) in the base game. The only thing I might wonder about is shifting Bulgaria also, but that might be too much too early and completely unbalance the game.

Late October, 1915

With Paris in German hands, the German Army is pushing to hold the Seine River. Corps moved to the sea. the 3rd, 4th and 5th Armies pushed down to the east of Paris. I'll continue this expansion eastwards in the hopes of making Verdun untenable for the French. The 6th Army will continue to push west. I get Trenches now and built one on Paris and one northwest of Paris. I don't have MC yet over the rest of the Seine. Trenches will be built along the Seine and a second set of trenches behind the front lines. My armies are getting depleted and will need to rest as the bad weather has hit now.

In the east, Warsaw fell. The Russians retreated. The 9th Army will push on Ivangorod and the 8th Army will push north along the Russian forts.

Nice work, I wouldn't be able to pull this off against the AI let alone another player.

Glad the Fall of Paris has not ended the game, if you manage to hold the WE at the Seine I would be surprised, now that Paris is gone it would be better for them to try to regain the momentum by isolating and defeating your corps/armies and then take Paris back once they whittle away at your forces.

They are depleted also and the weather is bad. They are also outnumbered across the front. If I were more aggressive, I'd continue pushing the attack, but with mud, discretion is the better part of valor and I need to build up my replacements. So the focus now is consolidating my hold along the Seine. The 2 French units around Sedan are isolated and badly depleted. He'll most likely withdrawal them and be forced to withdrawal along Verdun and south. At least that's the hope.

Late November, 1914

The fighting around Paris have paused and trenches are being built along the Seine. The 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th Armies along with OHL and Molke are shifting east along the Seine. In a another Turn Verdun will be isolated behind multiple German Armies if the French choose to defend Verdun.

In the east, Ivangorod has been breached and will be assaulted. The Russians are in full retreat. A short pause for winter and Brest-Litovsk and a northern push along the fort will be called for.

February 1915

Spared my 3 readers the winter turns. Here's where we are at by March, 1915.

Western Front

Slow Expansion. There will be a fight just south of Verdun. This will force the French out of Verdun or they will be isolated.

Eastern Front

Brest-Litovsk will be attack once the weather clears. The Germans will push into Russia on the western side of the swamps. The Austrians will push into Russia on the eastern side

Austrian Front

Russians are gone. Austrians will be taking the forts north of Lemberg and then push for Kiev.

Serbian Front

German Corp is support the assault on Belgrade

Objectives

German morale at 158. Production is doing well. Resiliency is good. All told, doing fine going into the 1915 campaign season. The battles in 1915 will be along eastern France. There's no trenches and I can circumvent his trench line south of the Seine.

You have a lot more readers than 3! Where are the Russian forces? They have 85% of your combat power, that's more than Britain and France combined! Great job in picking your fights, you've been in control of this game from the start.

What's been your opinion of variable turn lengths esp in winter? I found they helped keep the game moving though some haven't liked the fact movement is limited in these turns.

Actually, it's nice to blast through the slow winter turns, but it does skew some activities. Building, movement, production all get affected. Playing WON, which is all 1 week turn makes for a slow winter, but we tend to get turns in fast because nothing is going on. Of the two, I'd prefer the 1 week turns, but that could most likely blow out the production system.

Production only runs once per month regardless of # turns/month, so this adjusts.

March 1915

Nothing much happening due to weather. One battle along the western front. A French Army is now isolated on Verdun. I'm going to commit a German Army to it's destruction. For the 1915 campaign season,II'll be able to start extending my lines along the Seine and transfer more troops towards the Langres. If Langres is taken, the French player will be forced to start defending a much larger front, as I can threaten his supply lines along the south side of the Seine or roll up his flank
