Late June 1915 - Lithuania

Sat Sep 20, 2014 7:49 pm

I may have won a battle at Kowno, but the strategic victory is still up for grabs. Central Powers hold a 3:2 manpower advantage, not to mention aerial advantage. Their leaders are also smarter. Here's my lineup for strategic ratings: 6, 5, 4, 4, 4, and 4. Here's German, to the best of my reconnaisance: 9, 8, 8, 7, 6, 6, and 6. My Lechitski (6-3-1) versus von Kluck (9-7-0). Ouch.

6/16/15 - The second battle of Kowno (Lithuania)

Sat Sep 20, 2014 8:55 pm

My troops escape the battlefield quite promptly, despite orders to defend (the army in Kowno had defensive posture, all other units had offensive, to help reinforce the battle from across the river). In fact, virtually all Russian losses are from the poor saps who manned the Kowno magazines.

And so the battle line of September-May is restored. All quiet on the Lithuanian front?

6/17/15 - Air battles: Lemberg, Javorow (Galicia), Middle Niemen (Lithuania)

Sat Sep 20, 2014 9:06 pm

By the time I realize that seaplanes perform better against recon airplanes, and finally send them to the front, Central Powers already have their fighters in position. Does anyone have an extra, um, 100 planes and pilots I can borrow?

War-to-date summary: lost 179, show down 17 in return.

Early July 1915 - Serbia

Sat Sep 20, 2014 9:38 pm

While avoiding any major battles, Central Powers managed to cut my troops in half. While a rematch is tempting, I have to remember that there are couple of Bulgarian stacks sneaking off towards Skopje as well. Perhaps I will end up fortifying in Belgrade, Nish, and Skopje, and then wait for the winter as Bulgarians, Turks, and Austrians blockade me.

A cold, hungry winter.

7/2/15 - Air battles over Javorov, Przesmyl (Galicia), Kowno (Lithuania)

Sat Sep 20, 2014 10:36 pm

The skies erupted in flame once again. I don't know who is buying all those Russian aircraft - I stopped a while ago, and automatic replacements are turned off - but they are appearing... and getting shot...

The first two battles feature CP fighters.

Totals thus far: lost 235, shot down 17.

7/2/15 - Air battles over Teshe, Kowno (Lithuania)

Sat Sep 20, 2014 10:44 pm

2 of 3 battles go as usual, but a miracle happens over Teshe, the first battle below. A single Russian seaplane attack 54 Germans. And flies away. Safely. And 4 Germans do not.

My only explanation is that German pilots were so eager to shoot down the Russian that 2 pairs of them have collided.

Total losses by side thus far: Russia - 250, Central Powers - 21.

7/16/15 - 7/17/15 - The battle of Erzurum Forts

Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:54 am

In an unbelievable logistics success my troops make it to Erzurum. In another miracle, the main Ottoman army moves away. Either it ran out of supplies (but it was close to a depot?), or spread out too thin, with 5 separate stacks harassing my lines from Batum to Erevan, or... I don't know. Either way, I went for an all-out assault, knowing that it snows early in the mountains, and I will not get another chance this year.

The town did cost me a general, but that's a light price to pay for a depot deep in enemy territory.

Objectives roster following the capture of Erzurum

Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:59 am

Erzurum is the first addition to Allied objectives (although not the first loss for Central Powers - they got penalized when Trento fell). I wish there were more objectives to be worried about... after all, the way it is now, I can fall all the way to Moscow without having to worry about any morale loss.

7/17/15 - Air battles over Lupkov Pass, Przesmyl (Galicia)

Sun Sep 21, 2014 3:06 am

No battles in Lithuania - I clearly do not have anything capable of flying there anymore.

The first battle made me chuckle - a single Russian air wing against 8. I expected the repeat of Teshe miracle... no dice. 17 losses. How could 4 planes be shot down 17 times is beyond me.

Total losses by side to date: Russians - 285, Central Powers - 21.

7/24/15 - The battle of Slutch (Volhynia)

Sun Sep 21, 2014 3:10 am

This game is very rich on Austrian armies getting cut out of supply and slowly beaten to a pulp...

In my 6 other games I couldn't get a single stack like that. In this game, this one is already the second one.

8/5/15 - 8/6/15 - The battle of Sambor (Galicia)

Sun Sep 21, 2014 4:54 am

Unwilling to let go of the last summer days, Brusilov attempts to push west from Lemberg, where a few CP stacks await. Overall the battle is a wash, although 2 captured artillery regiments do make for a nice present.

Fighters to the rescue! Finally! I am tired of adding up Russian losses... last turn there were 4 battles, 33 planes went down, all mine. That's a 318:21 tally, not in my favor.

Russian troops are continuing to pour into Ottoman lands, hoping to solidify gains before winter. The main Ottoman army finally shows up, arriving from Trapzon area. I will say that all those impassable mountains do make for an interesting time planning movements...

Rumanian front is becoming very entangled, as I attempt a siege of Varna, and Bulgarian, Austrian, Ottoman troops engage in their own sorties as well. It's like a game of musical chairs: who will not have a depot to fall back to when snowflakes fall?

8/23/15 - The third battle of Kowno (Lithuania)

Sun Sep 21, 2014 5:54 am

I attempted to be sneaky, forcing two battles on the monstrous 3K German stack near Kowno, hoping it gets drawn south, and fails to protect the depot... Wrong. It never reacted to the fake battle. Maybe because my army did such a quick job at Olita that it never got a chance to try.

My fighters are at the front in Lithuania, but they haven't fought this turn. Elsewhere, in Galicia, I lost 57 more planes. The totals now are 375-21.

9/17/15 - Air battles over Kowno, Olita, Suwalki (Lithuania), Jaworov (Galicia)

And my aerial misfortunes are reversed as my brand new fighters join the battle. They fight experienced CP pilots with 3 XP - and prevail. 16 losses, 64 victories. War totals - 391:85.

In the south, things are still rough. Another battle, another 15 losses, for grand totals of 406:85... No matter. Next turn my southern squadron will arrive to Lemberg from Kiew... let's see what Austrians can do to protect themselves.

9/8/15 - 9/9/15 - The fourth battle of Kowno

Mon Sep 22, 2014 3:21 am

Kowno is quickly becoming the Verdun of the Eastern front, and today's battle is the bloodiest by far in the entire campaign. What really helps my troops is that the depot garrison surrenders, providing much needed supplies and ammo straight to the front lines. Defending in a forest helps as well.

Late September 1915 - Armenia

Mon Sep 22, 2014 3:32 am

In the north-west, my forces retreat to Batum, and even bombardments from Russian Black Sea fleet can't slow down the Turks.

In the east, Ottomans are repulsed at Nakhitchevan, but not without serious losses.

In the south-west, a scout detachment uncovers the second Ottoman army led by Sanders.

In the south, my troops are slowed down by muddy hills just off of Erzurum, and Turks quickly reinforce that area, making any further advances questionable.

I upgrade Erzurum depot, preparing for a long, long winter.

4 battles, mostly victories. My fighters are clearly making an impact. One unit, the 54th squadron, has reached level 4 experience. Total tally: 411 losses to 138 victories.

I just wish that air units were mixed, as they were in real life. I mean, who would send out recon airplanes without escort, if it was available? Or bombers?

This is essentially the swan song of Russian offensive of 1915, as I will not be able to supply all those troops through the winter, too many supply trains have been sent to Armenia. But I will return in 1916...

In the meantime I have to revise my tactics. CP is sending out more and more small stacks, and they keep outflanking my built-up corps left and right.

It is a bloody week in the skies, to the point that my brand new fighter wing in Galicia gets annihilated on the very first turn it joins action. I need more fighters. And I need to group them, utilizing WW2 tricks - send all you got to one area, clear out the enemy there, relocate.
