Late July 1914 - War Plans

Mon Sep 01, 2014 1:58 am

The main priority of this campaign is going to be preventing the Russian revolution at all costs. Of all the plans available I am choosing the historical one, because armies can be easily moved, but the morale penalty is harder to recover.

Cheers!! I'll definitely be reading this one. You are obviously more experienced than I am due to your choice of settings.

Early August 1914

Mon Sep 01, 2014 2:25 am

France, Germany, and Austria-Hungary choose historical options too.

Early August is all about Serbia. Belgrade has the best defensive position in the country, and I intend to let Central Powers come to me for their objective. All mobile Serbian forces are moved towards Belgrade, and even the city's garrison is pulled out into the field to help with trench works.

One of the initial generals is very weak, his strategic skill is just 1. More Serbian generals are called up. The goal is to have strong defenses in Belgrade, with relief forces in forests on both flanks.

August 15, 1914 - The first battle of Belgrade

Mon Sep 01, 2014 2:41 am

No sooner than Serbian troops are rallied together when enemy comes in force, over a hundred thousand of them. Austrians manage to find an approach that fortress guns do not cover, but Serbian field artillery makes a quick work out of them anyway. The battle unlocks the fortress garrison, and our morale is high.

Thank you :)

Well, I do want to see AI at its possible best. Well, almost - I stopped 2 levels shy of maximum in detection and 1 in activation.

Hey Lynxyonok, I thought 7-1-6 meant he has....

Strategic 7
Offense 1
Defense 6.

That's the way it has been in other Ageod games and admittedly I just assumed it to be the same. Is that incorrect?

It is clear that Belgrade will not be defended easily, as second Austrian army crosses Middle Sava just to the west. Two divisions led by Jurisic-Sturm just south of the city are ordered to dig in, to be reinforced by the Uzice Army marching north. Even Montenegrin allies are mobilized.

"Seniority 999" lol. I have a few generic generals at 1000 or 999. Those guys are never getting promoted.

Late August 1914 - Austria-Hungary

Mon Sep 01, 2014 4:23 am

The dice are cruel - every single Russian army commander facing Austria-Hungary has a strategic rating of 2 or fewer. Unable to see the strength of my enemy's generals, I go for a defensive play with a few feints to gather intelligence.

Sure they are. I got 6 useless army generals and a horrific GHQ ;) All they need is 3 good battles each.

August 19, 1914 - The second battle of Belgrade

Mon Sep 01, 2014 4:59 am

The second battle for Belgrade was not as impressive as the first one. While Austrians lost more men, I was expecting more out of now entrenched and staffed Serb units. Elsewhere a cavalry recon in Ruthenia met an Austrian patrol.

Early September 1914 - Eastern Prussia

Mon Sep 01, 2014 5:21 am

I did not expect German troops to advance to Lomza as opposed to the usual mad dash to Riga, and it took me by surprise. The first order of business would be to cut off their supply, and so both Russian armies in Eastern Prussia march to Loetzen.

September 3, 1914 - The third battle of Belgrade

Mon Sep 01, 2014 6:05 am

A massacre took place in Belgrade, while other parts of the front were quieter. In Eastern Prussia a German corps was destroyed but not before it captured a fortress and a Russian depot, severely limiting my operations, and in Poland I lost Ivangorod fortress.

While Austrian army is hurt, it is not depleted, and another corps is on the way. Serbian troops, some of them now at level 5 experience, are depleted.

Luckily, Uzice Army as well as 5th and 6th divisions finally arrive in Belgrade. Every active Serbian unit is there now.

I was able to surround 4th Austrian army at Czernowitz. With Stanislau depot destroyed in a raid, Lemberg depot blocked, and Czernowitz' own depot besieged, this army is now out of supply. Will it fight anyway or will it try to escape?

September 18, 1914 - The fourth battle of Belgrade

Mon Sep 01, 2014 7:12 am

Austrian troops are continuing their attempts to take Belgrade, and as before, they are unsuccessful. With 4 reserve divisions joining the battle on the Entente side, and Montenegrin army finally reaching a rail link, the future of Serbia appears to be positive.

A day later, Ivangorod in Poland is reclaimed - or saved to be exact, as a single battery and just a handful of men still held it, no more than 5% of the initial garrison. Numerous trophies are captured, including pontoon bridges.

Germans are massing in Memel, preparing for a mad dash to Riga. I have to mobilize reserves to intercept them, as to my surprise 2 entire stacks in Eastern Prussia run out of supply and have to be pulled off the frontlines.

October 3, 1914 - The fifth battle of Belgrade

Tue Sep 02, 2014 2:27 am

Austrian-Hungarians keep coming after Belgrade. And it's not just a frontal assault - I noticed 2 flanking corps that will start chipping off Serbia one village at a time. I sense an Ottoman army will be there soon as well.

But for now, it's a victory, and a big one, and one of my Serbian generals is ready for a promotion...

I was able to nudge two Austrian armies away from Lemberg and Czernowitz, and sieges are laid. I am very happy, as I am advancing with essentially 1-1 odds, allowing me to relocate half of Russian troops to Poland to face German troops there.

I concentrate my forces at Kars, preparing for a potential attack by the Ottoman forces. I still need to determine what are they going to do, reinforce Serbia, try a flanking maneuver, e.g. at Batum, or go for an all-out assault at Kars?

October 28, 1914 - The battle of Kars

Tue Sep 02, 2014 3:29 am

Ottoman troops go for the assault of Kars, almost taking the city. My battle plan fails, and only by a miracle it is not a loss. Two of three Russian corps are dislodged, and I may have to abandon the city altogether, or face major losses.

My Serbian army is proving to be the only ray of sunshine on my entire front. While Russian troops falls back, losing Lublin and Kars, my Serbs repulse the Austrians yet again.

Of course, there is a brand new army of theirs that just arrived across Sava...
