Suggestions regarding Mesopatamia

Fri May 29, 2015 12:13 am

I have been reading up on Mesopotamia in WWI and found it is a very interesting campaign, which is sadly there is little incentive to attempt to conduct in the game.
As the game stands right now I can see very little reason for the British to conduct a campaign in Mesopotamia. The supply situation is pretty much hopeless, since there is no river pool, add to this the fact that Baghdad is worth just 1 VP and why would you risk it? Granted in reality the British and Indian forces deployed there suffered terribly from a lack of adequate logistical preparation. But this fact is not per-ordained, it was a failure by the Indian Army staff, and it was eventually overcome. In game the methods with which it was overcome are unavailable.

First, the British, (and to a lesser extent the Turks), made use of the river for transport. Small ocean going vessels could navigate up both the Tigris and Euphrates for some distance, and formidable brown water navy was used by the British to ferry men to the front, and to support attacks on Turkish positions ashore. (Practically the entire campaign was conducted within artillery range of the rivers, as there were no other communications lines in lower Mesopotamia)

Second, in 1917, the British built a significant rail line to augment the river capacity to move men and material from Basrah to Baghdad.

Since there is no river pool (and no ability to get gunboats and river steamers to the theater) it is impossible to use the river as a LOC. Also there is no ability to construct a railroad by event. (Like in the Sinai) Therefore it is really impossible to conduct a Mesopotamia campaign.

Furthermore, with there is little incentive for it either. Baghdad is worth only 1 MP. In reality there was clearly an incentive for the British (and Indian) government to attack Baghdad. They felt Turkish presence there threatened Oil supplies from Persia which were essential to the war effort. Granted, they really only needed to defend Basrah and Adaban, but the once you commit resources to the theater the lure of a successful colonial campaign is hard to resist. The results of an early fall of Baghdad (1914 or 15) are hard to predict in retrospect, but it almost certainly would have precipitated the collapse of Ottoman authority in the Arab world. This could be simulated with an early and probably stronger trigger for the Arab Revolt event, and also a small morale hit if Baghdad is not captured by 1916.
