I got it.

I'm surprised because I thought the special ability icons are always shown on the unit counters?
Not so here. So, bug or WAD now?

It says in the tooltips for the special abilities. Engineers adds defensive points to the stack they are in, which the pioneers do not. I think.

edit: that is a bug you've got that I don't :)

Abilities icons aren't shown on the recruitment screen unit cards. But they are once the units are on map.
I think it's like this also on previous games.

the differences are in assault and assault damage plus one of the units adds defense.

Just open the combat tab and switch between the 2 units (highlight a unit then click its element) to see the differences

It's there, but only after the unit is purchased. Here is a picture with both units in an army showing that each one has it's abilities on the face card.

OK, so it's WAD. But this design decision is a bit strange, isn't it?

I suppose... it couldn't hurt to have the abilities in the purchase screen.

You could also see the issue Engineers and Pioneer as follows.

In some armies pioneers also glad Engineers.
This would in turn may complicate everything.
Engineerscorps are the precursors of today's pioneer troops.

I think you can evaluate in WW1 follows it here:

Pioneers came here for the first time in the reinforced role for the creation of trenches, dugouts, etc. ..
This was so in trench warfare on the Western Front later very needed.
The normal infantry or artillery did not have this knowledge.
The pioneers were specialized for this specific tasks.

Are engineers build technical teams. My opinion blurs the boundary of the activities of both troops something.

With a bonus to the siege of fortresses in the Engineers,
the Original previous task of Engeneers is reproduced here.

Another aspect is the inspection safety of their own fortress.
They will be give bonus of defensiv, the own fortress or Troops.
Thats very good.

Best regards

Michael

For most WWI armies engineers were highly trained specialists, in many including transmissions and various other tasks that would later be moved to separate services, they were usually aso the corps manning the trench mortars, flame throwers, gas and electric warfare etc. Pioneers on the other hand were usually infantry which were used on labour tasks (digging the trenches, repairing roads etc.) but retained some combat capacity similar to line infantry (usually with lower dotations in weapons, particularly few if any machine guns)...

Of course the historic role is not necessarily the ingame role...

P.S.: In German Service Pioniere (of the old Geniekorps) were what others called Engineers...

They used to show in the recruitment pool all the way to about 1.03 in CW2. Then they disappeared and never came back, showing only when actually on map. I don't know why they were removed, but it's really only important when just beginning to learn a game, so I never gave it another thought.
