Carl Schurz and his Cavalry - something for the next patch or version.

Thu Jun 09, 2016 5:13 pm

Carl Schurz shouldn't be available in 1861, according to this article.
Not for another year later:

One of the first things he did was recruit the 1st NY Vol Cavalry in July/Aug 61

So the cavalry unit should be available however he should not.

Perhaps the game gets it right, the force he recruits is an early unit to engage.

It's only one small cavalry unit, not the division the article mentions he gets
in June of 62, and it's quite handy for rushing in to take and hold Harpers
Ferry, but according to the article that I posted he probably shouldn't
be available until 62, seeing as how he wasn't back in the US until the
end of 1861. According to Teatime's article the unit went right into
service, so it should be usable.

lincoln apointed him in April 62 as part of gaining minority support for the Republicans, before that he was minister to Spain, he got a full Div to command Blenkers old command almost all german american, with no mil experience, but turned out to be one of better political apointments.

he was still running that division at Gettysburg .. in XI Corps ... so a decent general it seems .. better than Sigel by all accounts

Seems to me that the political support of German Americans, and political reward of same, would work as an event, with NM increase as well as establishing largley all German formations. Teatime notes an important point, due to seniority he outranked many, in game i dont know how he progresses as i rarely play US.
