Portrait mod

I couldn't find a mention of it in the forum. Is there someone out there who has added or updated the leader portraits for CW2, or someone that is working on a mod? I am currently filling in some of the blanks since I never have liked the look of the clone portrait army. I appreciate the work that went into the existing portraits, but I the photos better. So I think I'm going to replace all of them.

If anyone is interested, I can probably package something when I've finished them. Replacing the existing ones is easy. For the new ones I'd probably have to distribute a modified DB file you can compile, or a set of model files with the updated info. Below is an example. I'm no good at colorization of these, although I could probably tone them to a standard.

No problem from me here is a more uptodate link https://www.dropbox.com/s/5fumj5maju2eyeo/Graphics.zip?dl=0 with a few more added currently doing GD Wagner.
Maybe we should have a thread for portraits so people don't overlap, there's plenty to do :)

I copied the new graphic files. After that I modded the model files (only change the unit file names) and.... nothing changed in the game. I tried to delete the catched model file but the game crashed. Backup and works again (without changes). Is there a simple solution for this problem? I use the 1.04 version of the game.

You are probably having the same problem some of the rest of us are having, in that some of your model files are missing from the model folder.

http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?37844-1-04-patch-seems-to-be-missing-some-model-files
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?36595-Add-leader-mod-mod-existing-leader

You might find copies of the missing model files in the extra directory created with the 1.04 patch, Gamedata/_Models . Instead of deleting your models.cached file, try renaming it, copying the missing models and then starting the game. I'll bet that will correct the problem.

Yeah! It works! Thanks for your quick and effective help!

Strangely I dont have this problem, I was able to add portraits to what I consider to be my pristine 1.04 install (until then had been using my Aitod install which might not quite be 1.04) the model file I added the portrait (David Stanley) to was in the Models folder (ie not the one with the underscore where Stanley is unchanged) I did however use the 1862 scenario (because I knew Stanley was there from the beginning).

Here's one for the CSA's "P. Anderson," who I believe is actually J.P. Anderson. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Patton_Anderson) You're welcome to colorize it.

Finally finished Wagner not a particularly good picture and not especially inspiring subject so took me a while. When I'm interested I can knock them off in a day.
updated link below for the current collection.

So can someone explain how I download and where I place it and if this will affect PBEMs?

this link still seems ok https://www.dropbox.com/s/5fumj5maju...phics.zip?dl=0

there are basic instructions in a text file about how to add to the game. I don't know about PBEM , all thats being changed is the portrait being used.

These pictures aren't really a mod in themselves they are just being made available for people to add in themselves or incorporate into a mod.

If you want to try them and are having problems just ask.

As far as PBEMs go, I think it would depend on whether the game checks for consistency in the unit and model cache files on the different computers. If all you are doing is updating a specific, non-generic portrait file and not changing the name of the file, I don't think it will matter. If you alter a model file to point to a new portrait file name, that might cause an issue. I have not tested this and don't know for sure.

I've changed the model files: the generic portraits changed to the portraits above.

You only have to do is copy them (and overwrite the existing ones) into your Gamedata\Models directory.

One interesting thing: after that I rename my Models.cached file then run the game and it works. After I quit and I want to run the game again I have to rename the Models. cached file again. One load - one renaming. If I don't do it the result is quite interesting. :D

Why?

Some people were having an issue after a previous patch I don't know if that was resolved, I hven't updated recently.
Another thing to try may be to delete the original files then paste in the modified ones, I always had to do that in AACW.

When I installed the portraits in my game I directly changed the files in my models folder (I have a back up CW2 folder) I didnt overwrite them.
I then delete my cache file (models and units) and run. The new cache files then are ok until any new changes.

best of luck

I will try it tonight. Thanks for your advice.

Are there any new leader graphic? Did you contact Pocus to take the existing ones into the patch? Or you don't want to do it?

Is there anyone who understand my question? Any reply? :mdr:

Hi
I havent started another one, I tend to do them in bursts when I'm in the mood.
As far as I'm concerned the portraits I've posted are available for anyone to incorporate into the game as they see fit.

I first want to express some real thanks to everyone who's contributed here. Especially to Eugene Carr, your contributions are immense and greatly appreciated.

I want to fill out the missing leaders pics, and maybe even mod in leaders missing from the game (though idk if that'll ever happen since I'm splitting my AGEOD modding time among 4-5 games and that takes up about 2% of my overall PC time:bonk :)

Thing is, I can't do colorized portraits. Maybe I'll learn, like I've learned other stuff, but for now I can only deal with already colorized pics or black and whites.

If anyone else has made stuff beyond what's posted here, please, please post it so I can steal it for my game! :w00t:

Here are a few new pics I've made for Union leaders.

The colorizations are NOT mine, I simply found them on the net and cut them to the right shapes and sizes. That's the limit of my current skills. Idk if the B/W helps anyone, it's more of a test case to see if I should spend my time adding B/W pics to missing guys or just not bother. So please let me know what you think on that once you try it out!

Oh, and I didn't post portrait pics of Robinson or Cox since the originals wouldn't do them justice. Figured a missing portrait pic would be better than a super bad one for them.

Anyhow, here are the pics:

The pic for Jacob Cox above was way, way too big seen in game. This is a bit better even though it has the writing on it.

Lots of new pics. Fwiw, many of these guys won't appear naturally in game. You'll have to manually edit the events files to get them to show up. I have an edited events file, will post it after I've gotten a bit further.
