Demote general

Is it possible to demote a general in the game? I cant find the button to do so, as explained in the manual.

I am pretty sure the manual is referring to removing Army Command from a general by demoting generals.
In other words, there is no way to make a two star general a one star general; however, you can make the Commander of the Army of the Potomac a corps or division leader under a new commanding general.

It appears in the manual, and indeed there is a button in the graphic files.

But for some reason the feature was not added to the game.

In any event, I can't recall a case where historically a civil war general got demoted. The bad ones just got fired and then were never given major commands again.

What about Joe Hooker? He got demoted and continued to serve.

Joe Hooker was fired as AoP commander, but he never lost his MG rank. You are right that he got further assignments out West. Burnside is another good example. After Fredericksburg, he retained his rank, got a command in Kentucky, and did well in the Knoxville campaign. He came back East for the Overland Campaign, which created an issue because he was senior to MG Meade. So his corps reported directly to LTG Grant and was not technically part of the AoP for the campaign. (Later Burnside agreed to wave seniority to serve under Meade directly... something other union generals refused to do.)

It doesn't help that Union ranks were a bit of a mess, given Congress allowed only one LTG.

If you want to “demote” a three star general, give him command of the army of Minnesota. Or a weak corp under a higher ranked three star.

Like with Pope and the previously mentioned Hooker and Burnside
