Civil War III - To be or not to be?

Fri Jan 31, 2020 6:57 am

Given the recent comments by the esteemed Pocus about AGEOD wanting to make a Civil War 3, and his advice that we players need to voice our support of such a thing in the Slitherine forums, I think it prudent to post a new thread with the intention of collecting as much support as possible from fellow players and then someone (hopefully the developers ;) ) forwarding that support en masse, rather than in dribs and drabs which may well be of negligible impact. So, ladies & gentlemen, pledge your support here and let us see if we can make something happen. This superb game deserves another go :)

I will provide any support, but the Slitherine folks don't pay much attention
to this page really. If you are on their forum start a thread there.

Out of interest, does anyone know the kind of budget games like these are afforded for creation, marketing, etc?

The costs are mostly coming from development salaries, even if art and graphics might need a decent budget, that's not the main cost.
So just figure out the price of 1 to 3 developers for 12 to 24 months (sometime 36) in your country, depending of the scope of the game. Now CW3 would be able to benefit from AGEOD experience in CW2 and 1, so could be done in one year probably (ballpark figure).

You can always mount up a team and ask Slitherine for a licence of the Archon engine :)

Really? That's a possibility? I actually have mentioned this very idea to a fellow member of this forum as I have heard of the same thing being done with another game I played (Paradox Interactive's Darkest Hour) but was not all at sure that such a thing would be achievable here.

As for gathering up a team of people with experience with both Civil War I & II, there are many exceptionally bright and capable people here with the forum who I feel would be more than capable of producing something quite special if assembled together. I digress...

You may say I'm a dreamer... ;)

Myself and a few other lads are hoping to move ahead with a few things pretty soon. Might work, might not, but it won't be for lack of trying :)

Interesting, but is it a MOD or something officially supported?

At the moment, due to an unforeseen global stagnation, it is neither. But there were and are still genuine but guarded hopes of the possibility of something official.

Be careful now, don't want you to huff and puff so hard that you either hyperventilate or sail Tasmania to the coast of South America

I'm pretty happy for Tassie to stay right where it is, particularly right now. So maybe I'll take it a little easier on the huff 'n' puff ;)

I've been asked to add my support to this idea. Obviously I am in favour of a CW3, though I have some serious doubts about it.

If it were to happen I'd be volunteering as alpha and researcher. But one important note, beyond having to be done on Slitherine's engine as I cannot imagine Athena to get a major overhaul, it will require design and research time to make it a worthy successor. At least a year for the historic research if there are enough people to do the work, after that another half or even full year testing and getting fresh ideas.

So yes, I'd be onboard, but rather sceptic at this time.

Out of curiosity, have the people you were considering developing CW3 with tinkered at all with FoG: Empires or any other Archon engine games?

No, it didn't get that far, sadly enough. We were on the verge of 'tinkering' but it coincided with a certain virus crashing over us all and by the time we'd all regathered our senses we'd moved onto other things. Shit timing, it must be said.

That's a pity because I'm rather sure that you can push the current engine to much more details. Plus you would get an up to date engine which run faster.
