Struggling with broken links and such like.

Fri Apr 21, 2017 11:58 pm

Hi all,

So I have been spelunking into the forum and reading up on various topics. But I keep getting stymied by running into broken links and not being able to progress, or I finally find an original post only to find that the documents attached to the original post are gone.

The example for today was that I found reference to some checklists. Searching led me to the old AACW forums and after a number of dead trails I finally found the thread in which the Union checklist was originally posted - but the documents are no longer available.

I then tried the AACW wiki hoping that maybe these might have been preserved there, but no luck so far.

I have no problem with doing my research, but I feel I am spinning my wheels a bit too much.

So is there a current place where the CSA and Union checklists are available? I am just interested to see if the turn checklist I started to make is aligned with others, or if I have omitted something. But I am interested in plenty of other topics as well, but more often then not the "read this post for more information link" leads to nowhere.

I am going to guess that these forums experienced some kind of catastrophic problem based on the number of bad links I am encountering. It happened on the old Battlefront forums as well and tons of information was lost, except what the users saved on their own machines....

The forum software was updated a while back. We all hoped that dead links were going to be restored...eventually. I'll see if I can find any checklists.

Here is a general checklist for AGEOD games:

If you find broken links this info may be helpful. Add the number of the thread at the end of the addresses below:

For the good old game AACW.

Code: Select all

http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=

For CW2.

Code: Select all

http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=331&t=

For example, this broken link for AACW

Code: Select all

http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?13016-Frontage-Primer-and-Questions&p=129422&viewfull=1#post129422

Works with this formatting, note the number of the thread is 13016

Code: Select all

http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=13016

So click here (without the code format) to read the thread "Frontage primer"

viewtopic.php?f=78&t=13016

First post!
404's out the wazoo! I'm too old (mid 60's) and life is too short to find out how, to find out how, to play the game. Any help restoring or finding the links is greatly appreciated.
I'm a life long history buff, most especially "The American Civil War". I have often thought that I would have done things differently and this game seems to provide an opportunity to test my hypotheses.
Thanks to the gentleman that originally queried all who have replied.

Well, welcome to the forum then dfoidog :hat:

Okay, I know it's not comfortable, but it's also not terribly complicated. Really, if you can manage to play the game, this is easy.

The forum uses 3 unique sets of numbers to record Forum/Topic/Post. These have not changed from the previous forum, What has changed is the PHP commands to access these. But since the new forum software is fairly intelligent, we only need the thread/topic number to access that threat/topic.

Using the thread Nikel used previously as an example, the old link is: http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?13016-Frontage-Primer-and-Questions&p=129422&viewfull=1#post129422 in which in the old forum software '13016-Frontage-Primer-and-Questions' identified the thread.

The new software however only needs the number (in front of the first '-', without the thread name 'Frontage-Primer-and-Questions', which we can ignore. The PHP command has also changed from 'showthread.php' to 'viewtopic.php', and there is a minor change to the format, from 'showthread.php?13016-Frontage-Primer-and-Questions' to 'viewtopic.php?t=13016'. 'viewtopic.php' actually defines how what you want to access is displayed, ie thread/topic view.

In fact, since 'viewtopic.php' defines the display of what you are accessing, it can actually be used with what ever information you have, which is unique to the thread/topic you want to access. It is not necessary to define the forum number (f=78), only the thread/topic number (t=13016), or even only the post number (p=1294226).

So, going back to the previous forum software link above, we can actually reduce the URL (Uniform Resource Locator / aka the http address) to http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=13016 OR http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=129422 to access that thread.

Unfortunately, to actually position the initial view to post number 129422, you have to append '#p129422' to which ever URL you use, even if you are using 'p=129422' to access the tread. That's just the way the forum software works.

So, to access the 'Frontage-Primer-and-Questions' thread/topic and position to the the post in the example, you can use http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=13016#p129422 OR http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=129422#p129422.

There, that's really all you need to know to access any URL in the old forum software format.
