Solid State Drives

Fri Mar 06, 2015 10:23 pm

I just upgraded my PC with a couple of 120GB solid state drives, one for Win8 and other essentials and the other specifically for games. I copied CW2 on to it to see what would happen and referesh my memory of the game.

This baby flies on an SSD. I got through the first tutorial (re-familiarizing myself) in record time and with much more success than I have had before. Everything works better and smoother. Armies rocket around the map. Battles resolve nearly instantly. And thanks to the WEGO model I still have time to organize and make decisions.

Are there any downsides to playing off an SSD other than the possibility that if you put too many big games on an SSD you'll run out of space?

I recently doubled my RAM and installed an SSD as well. Like you, I noticed a wicked performance improvement, especially in turn resolution times. I haven't noticed any downside to using an SSD, just be sure you've configured your system to operate efficiently using the SSD (Windows TRIM command and AHCI mode enabled, for example).

From what I've read, if you did a fresh installation, you should not have to do anything else. Windows 7 and above recognize the SSD during installation and sets itself correctly to operate optimally with it.

If you've migrated to the SSD's, Google for 'SSD windows migration' because there are a number of things you need to set in Windows so to get the best experience with your new SSD's and not wear them out with unnecessary disk-IO.

Have fun
