Marines - one in each corps enough?

Thu Dec 26, 2013 11:05 am

Hi

As the title says - will a marine unit in a corps give its bonus (reg. opposed river crossings) to all divisions in the corps?
Or do I need to have a marine in each division?

And another question on marines:
I just lost 4 marines units due to a stupid mistake on my side (tried to ride them directly to a battle site partially by railroad - they ended up arriving before my invading army and got annihilated).
Next turn I could only raise 2 marine regiments - no more left in the pool.
Will these units be available in the pool again - or have I lost them for the rest of the game.
I'm playing with historical manpower/unit availability.

The marine unit bonus applies to all units stacked with the marine unit. You need only a single marine unit per stack.

Generally, when a unit is lost, its elements are placed back in the pool. You should be able to rebuild you missing 4 marine units in the next turn.

The marine ability tooltip says that it applies to all elements of the unit that this element is in. Doesn't this mean it will apply to the division that the marines are in but not the stack?

They give their ability to the Division Commander, who should in turn give it to the whole stack, no?

No, the ability is a unit ability; a division being a unit. So only the division with a marine or sailor element embedded in it will enjoy the amphibious ability.

If you have multiple division in a corp each division must contain a marine or sailor.

Going strictly by the rules even if all divisions in a corp have the amphibious ability the "reserves" (units in the corp, but not in a division) in a corp will not enjoy the amphibious ability, even if there is also a "reserve" marine or sailor in the corp stack, because corps are stacks (groups) and not units.

Then using the single marine unit that appears early in the GC game should have no effect on a corps or an army? That is not what I have observed. I generally place the marine unit into the McDowell's army stack as a reserve unit. I have noticed that the army stack has improved river crossing times compared to the corps assigned to the army. This is especially true when using synchronised movement. When crossing a river, the army stack always crossed first before the corps.

Ummm... boss, marines and sailors no longer have the Pontooner ability. They have the Amphibious ability, which is an advantage to strength when invading, but has nothing to do with a movement-enhancement.

Strange. My fear of having the marine assisted army stack crossing the river before the more powerful corps arrived and facing the defending forces alone, caused me to change my original strategy. I now send the marine unit to Norfolk to save the naval base for the Union. The army and its corps are now in sync on river crossings. When did the marines loss their river crossing ability as my experience is on pre-1.02 and earlier 1.01 versions?

:mdr:

I thought the first pre-beta was out right at the end of June, but it might have been one of the first days of July ;)

All that I'm absolutely sure of is sitting in Gettysburg late in the evening during the 150th anniversary of the great battle as the heat of the sweltering days dissipated and trying out the new game
