And another bloody battle is upon us. For some reason, my troops failed to move out of Drepanum... and now they are locked in it once again. I have seen this before in my earlier campaigns, when an army just would not be able to get away from the field of battle, but I always thought it was due to being surrounded... Drepanum has Roman holdings bordering it in every direction. A couple more of these battles, and I may have to start hiring Messalan troops as cannon fodder.

My troops finally escape, but at a great cost. 9NM was lost over the course of 3 battles, and a war that seemed to be almost won is now back on an even keel.

A quiet spring and summer as both sides recuperate... and here comes the greatest battle of the war thus far, 48000 men dead.

The war is pretty much at a standstill. The entire Roman army is pinned at Drepanum, hoping to take that city... eventually. Carthage manages to take out one of my level 1 forts in east Sicilia, and suddenly they have a brand new level 4 depot courtesy of Roman army. That, and barbarians are running all over Sicilia and now mainland Italy, but they are too weak to make a dent anywhere.

A great naval battle is fought. 43 Carthaginian ships go down, and I get ...0NM. Seriously? I lost 1NM for 3 lost ships before.

A fleet for a fleet: I massacre a Carthaginian fleet west of Sicilia, while they catch my backup fleet, already damaged by storms and trying to retreat along Italian coast to Volsinii. Now I have no way of transporting my Massalan hordes anywhere useful.

Aha the Return of Hanno Senior was great! The war is now starting to look like a real 1st Punic War, with both sides heavily committed, sending armies after armies to the Sicilian hell...

I wonder how the devs came up with such nice stats for this Hanno - probably a balance consideration? Or is it the randomized stats? He is a bit of an Hannibal of the 1st Punic War...

High randomization. He is 3-5-3 originally.

Roman forces abandon the siege and fall back to Syracusae to recuperate. Tauromenium is reclaimed. After brief rest, Roman attack again... so furiously, that an entire legion is wiped out off the map.

Corsica belongs to the Roman empire now. This was an almost 2-year project, as I managed to overlook the fact that the Carthaginian fort was only level 1.

Next step - Sardinia.

Hanno Senior goes after Messana again... and Romans quickly follow. Both sides are locked in a series of skirmishes, and eventually Romans start to win, as Carthaginians are starving.

In other news, the enemy must have lost a fleet in a storm, as for the first time in the entire war I have more ships than them. And I only have 130 from a peak of 200+. I guess the two merchants they sank in Mare Ionium cost them a bit too much.

Victory! Carthaginian army is ground into oblivion in many, many skirmishes over the last 3 months. And now nothing can stop Romans from taking Sicilia.

And Sardinia, as my 6411-strong fleet is heading there right now...

Roman empire continues its slow progress. Despite almost a 1,000 deficit in VPs, my troops are on the winning streak. Gallura in Corsia falls; Melita is taken; Drepanum is the last remaining Carthaginian holding in Sicilia.

Enemy fleets have recovered, numbering anywhere from 109 to 141% of my force - I got 170 ships.

So will Carthage make a last come back or... will you bring victory to Rome in "only" 9 nine years and a quarter of million casualties?

Still, I'd like to see Hamilcar.

From a gameplay mechanic point of view, can you confirm that the bloody Lilybaeum battle (the one resulting in a stalemate) was a 7- or 8-round battle?

Oh I am sure you will. Carthage made peace with Numidia, and that will make landing on their shores tough. Plus that deficit in VPs is not going away, they are still earning 22 to my 19. That means a long war.

I am yet to see a 6-round battle. I get 5 good rounds, then 3 blanks, with nothing listed...

Walls of Drepanum are breached, and Romans launch 2 assaults, using their many allies as cannon fodder. Both battles go deep into the night, reaching 8 rounds each.

Softened by the blood of my allies, remaining Carthaginians are no match for rested legions. Drepanum falls.

Sicilia is in Roman hands. Victory is near.

Hasdrubal lands in Sicilia in a vain attempt to turn things around... lands right on top of a Syracusae army. Hi, Hasdrubal. Bye, Hasdrubal. And hello victory...

Thank you for all these AARs which convince me i should buy BOR. It was also a good test for HARDE mod.

And congratulations for your victories in quite hard conditions.

When will you play a PBEM? Image

Chapter Five: Carthaginians - Mercenary War, -241

Mon Oct 06, 2014 2:32 am

While technically former Carthaginian mercenaries were not on the Roman side, they did fight Roman enemies, and that will grant them an entry in our story...

The first town in my path falls with ease, but a huge problem presents itself, not to be ignored: there is no supply. I don't have any impedimenta, and I can't build any. My only chance of survival lays in quickly overpowering the two remaining level 1 forts...

2 successful sieges later, the mercenary army is on Carthage's footsteps. Where should they go? Is there any real hope in successfully laying siege to these great ports of a country with a powerful fleet?

Carthaginians recover rather fast, sending 28000 men to engage my cavalry recon. Now I will have to group everyone together for what I hope will be one major battle I will win. Or the campaign is lost.

For a while, the victory seems to be at hand. Carthaginian army is defeated, time and again, and falls back, as I chase it for the precious Impedimenta it possesses... but my troops are not fast enough. When the next major engagement is fought, they are hungry, starved... and defeated.

Just as the last soldier from my army falls slain, Gods have mercy on my cause: one Carthaginian city rebels, and 20000 Lybians cross the border to join my banner.

The last Carthaginian mainland city to rebel, Utica, is still holding. I can't relieve it - no fleet, can't break out - can't build an army there, so all I can do is wait. That's what the campaign has become, waiting... I do take over the entire Sardinia, but then again, can't build, can't sail...
