Why, is this scenario that twisted?

All quiet on the southern front. Utica is still besieged. Sardinia is firmly in my hands. Well, almost: locals rise up against me.

We exchange a few battles, nothing decisive... and then Romans come, and my army vanishes into this air.

Oh well, back to Utica, and its defenders, stout as Trojans of the old days...

A quick look at casualties and objectives - I doubt they will change much, as Carthage refuses to blockade Olbia by sea, which means the siege will outlast the scenario...

Another uprising! Corsica is in rebellion. That means my second to last city, Olbia, is now gone. All I have left is the besieged fortress of Utica...

Chapter Six (as Populares): Pontics and Optimates, -87

Mon Oct 06, 2014 5:42 pm

After a brief debate I decide to continue down the AJE/BOR path. Once I complete it, I will consider buying HAN and other expansions / dlcs to add to my collection.

After another brief debates and a couple of quick losses, I switch sides to Populares again - for now.

So, the year -87 finds Rome divided for the first time. Slaves, pirates, Pontics, Populares... it will be an interesting war to say the least...

*Save game edit warning: From this point on I reserve the right to rename legions to their historic names*

True... but it was still fun. I *almost* pulled it off... had I played without long delay... had I... Anyways, I will try this one again :)

It is all about Rome, at all costs! African units are shipped to Sicilia, barely avoiding the pirates, and slaves are formed into their own legion up north.

Roma falls, as expected, and it is other things that are interesting: Lusitanii are on the warpath, capturing Olisippo, while closer to home Pompeius Strabo retains his legions - in all my other games he would resign.

Pontics land in Sicilia as a reminder, that they are a powerful empire that can handle two Roman factions at the same time...

Second Pontic landing in Sicilia, and this time they attempt to cross onto the mainland, unsuccessfully.

Hispania is quickly spiraling out of control. I send a second commander there to balance out command penalties.

Hispanic and Sicilian fronts are stabilized. On the mainland, forces of Pompeius Strabo appear to be quick a match to reckon with.

A bloody month in Sicilia, where my legions stop just short of throwing the cursed Pontics back into the water they came from:

The final battle is a loss, and despite 3-to-1 superiority in numbers, my troops fall back.

Numerous battles follow, but overall Populares are having to fall back. Whereas AI is receiving extra replacements due to Consul setting (the highest one available), my men are taking the full brunt of the HARDE mod. Several depots are rushed into service to assist the replacement process.

That's when I lose Marius. He was a great leader (7-4-2), and his loss will be felt quite deeply. At least I had a chance to recruit 2 slave legions during his reign.

(Overall 6 new legions have been raised: 3 regular Italica, 2 slave ones, and a prisoner one that appeared in North Africa)

Pontic threat in Sicilia has been neutralized, and I can concentrate on the mainland Italia now. I can't wait too long - even with raising multiple legions - a total of 8 since the beginning of the war - I only have half of Optimates strength and one third of Pontus. Hispania army is holding its own, thankfully, although Lusitanian raiders are starting to pierce deep into my territory. They are weak, they lose most battles, but they are all over the place.

In Greece Pontics retake Athens, which makes me wonder: Where's Sulla?

A major Optimates force lands - or is conscripted - in Naples, a total of 13 separate stacks, ranging in strength up to 200. This signals either Sulla - or another set of reinforcements I must deal with immediately. I start to pull my forces to Central Italia.

Here are my current legions locations, prior to me renaming them for clarity and flavor:

In Hispania my troops catch up to the main Lusitanian army, chasing it away once again.

In Italia, a major Optimates force is besiges in Neapolis.

In Graecia, Populares send an expeditionary corps... which lands right on top of Optimates and Pontus forces. Fun!

I narrowly avoid a supply disaster in Neapolis, as my troops find themselves starving. An emergency assault is launched against Capua so that a supply link to Roma can be established. Optimates manages to sneak in a relief force, although I am not sure if that will help.

Overall this is becoming a true civil war, no true front of any kind, all factions mixed in all over...

Sulla is still mysteriously missing, although his armies have been making quite some progress in North Italy and even south France.
