Okay, so, I am 10 years late to the party. But I am playing AJE and expansions, and loving it!
Like Rome, the glory that is AJE is timeless.

Pardonnez moi ... my French is terrible, but I had no trouble reading what you wrote ... I speak Kreyòl Ayisyin (Haitian Creole), but have studied French.
Have you checked out Pocus' new game Field of Glory Empires|Field of Glory II? (Matrix/Slitherine)? I like many of the Total War conversions like Roma Surrectum, Europa Babarorum, and Divide et Imperium. But all of these are more so sandboxes; although educational compared to AJE which really puts particular conflicts into a historical context and framework.

What is most fascinating ... Alexander and the Macedonians/Greeks; Ghengis Khan and the Mongols rapidly built amazing empires, but they also did not last. Only Rome and China really endured.

I got it, you prefer history to sandboxing.
Many years ago, I used to play EU2, and despite historical events, if you play long enough, the world will bear no resemblance to what really took place.
However, history's real what-ifs are fascinating:
* What if Alexander didn't die so young?
* What if Constantine didn't have his vision of the Christian cross?
* What if the climate had not changed and the Mongols were not driven to migrate from their traditional home?
* What is the Black Death had not killed off 50% of Europe's and Asia's population?
* What if the Mongols had not brought to an end the Golden Age of Islam?
* What if Batu Kahn was not distracted by the death of Great Kahn? Mongol culture called for a returning the homeland. Batu had planned to head West and Vienna next.
