Why don't you want to wait until the 1860s?

If you wait for the 1860s .... or even if playing the separate 1862 scenario ... is there a way to play into the 20th century? Is there a way to extend the end of the scenario? I guess there would be a lot of scripting involved to give more leaders, to even give upgraded units?
