Round One 'Far West' Tournament thread.

josh4bs is USA, Yellowhammer is CSA.

I expect to post neutral news, then follow up with an AAR, er, After the Action...

CSA defeated USA at Battle of Fort Smith AR, destroying Artillery battery and capturing Supply wagons.
USA defeated CSA at Battle of Little Rock AR, destroying Brigade (2 Infantry regiments and Cavalry regiment).

USA Lyon's Force is gone, and Lyon may be out for the rest of the war, for all I know. (ed - got CSA Price and USA Lyon confused - Price is fine, just a little hungry).

My mistake, I shouldn't have ordered the AR Brigade to amphibious assault (red) at Little Rock. USA Cavalry won the game for Josh - taking Fort Smith early and then defense, and taking Little Rock and then defense.

My last bit of satisfaction may be to destroy those cavalry regiments...

I would have been posting on this thread had I been able to find it. Sorry for the apparent lack of enthusiasm.

Yellowhammer, thanks for posting this thread. I have learned a good amount during our short skirmish. But am considerably worried about the next round...

With one turn left currently, it seems that I have stolen a victory, although I did my best in the fall to throw it away...

Looking forward to the flip-flop battle coming.

I see that Lyon made it to St. Louis - without his command...

Josh - I don't think of your victory as stolen - in fact, I'm going to try the exact same USA maneuvers on you... LOL

We have come to a screeching halt just a couple of turns before the end of the first round. Barksdale is experiencing difficulties with his game and has not been able to rectify the situation in order to continue hosting.

Not sure of the path forward, but wanted to let all know that we are stuck.

Up to you as we had no rules in place, but I'm going to say go with whatever your current score is and start round 2. ... unless you can recover an earlier turn.

A way forward

I was thinking along the same lines...Since we are 1 or 2, can't remember, turns from being done, that should be agreeable.

However, we need to find another host, as I believe that Barksdale is not going to be able to host it...I guess we need to check with Benway9 to see if he could host......We will see.

You might also play only up to the point you made it to in the first game - to be fair.

It looks like Josh won Round One. We are in the process of determining the final score - but be assured that Josh whupped my butt.

Benway has offered to host Round Two (where I will copy shamelessly from Josh, sending the Missouri Cavalry immediately to Fort Smith AR).

AAR:

Josh (USA) won at Turn 3 (Late August) when the Missouri Cavalry took Fort Smith AR. I wasn't able to recapture Fort Smith AR until Late November, at which time Josh took Little Rock AR with his Cavalry.

My Plan was to:

Hold Fort Smith AR and Little Rock AR.
Deny Supply to USA (destroy Springfield MO and Fayetteville AR Depots).
Hold Charleston MO.
Take and hold Council Bluffs IA.
Destroy USA depots and rail.
Destroy USA Indian Villages.

I did OK except for the holding Fort Smith and Little Rock parts. I burned the Springfield Depot, but the Fayetteville Depot changed hands - I ended up with it. I held Charleston MO. I was able to 'hold' Council Bluffs IA (halting unit production for a few turns), but couldn't capture the town since I had only sent Partisans (my original plan was to send Watie and his Indians). I wasn't able to keep Rolla Depot long enough to destroy it, but I did destroy some rail. I pacified the USA Indian Villages.

The jewel of my plan was to take Council Bluffs IA, since it is a major potential producer of units. I had hoped that would disrupt the USA enough to achieve a CSA victory.

Lessons Learned:

I sent an AR Brigade (2 Inf / 1 Cav) to threaten St. Louis in Early September. I thought I was being slick by ordering them to debark at Hill MO (region South of St. Louis). I thought that since the St. Louis Harbor only exited to Belleville Bend, and since my guys would be deboating from Kaskaskia Confluent, that my guys would be safe. Oops. Fort St. Louis shot 'em up real bad (from 67 Power to 9 Power) - turns out that Forts shoot at adjacent river regions.

I also had the CSA Gunboats posted at the Kaskaskia Confluent, set to assault any troops sent from St. Louis by boat. I don't know if Josh could see them or not, but in my mind they may have helped protect Charleston MO.

Observation:

Starving troops do not seem to count toward "Combat Losses", so CSA losses are greater than the reported totals.

Josh and I have accepted the following Victory Points total to close out our game (based on actual points plus estimated remaining points):
USA = 275
CSA = 118

As the CSA, I'll have to be content with having inflicted about 50% more casualties on 'those people' than I suffered (about CSA = 6,450 vs USA = 9,914; I made 'em pay for the indignities suffered by the good peace-loving people of Arkansas).

I'm somewhat troubled by this, because I would've preferred to preserve more of my force. I don't like taking casualties - and I really hate having my fellas starve to death - both of these indicate poor management.

Late July, 1861

National Morale:
USA = 100
CSA = 100

Victory Points:
USA = 8
CSA = 10

Total Combat Losses:
USA = 0
CSA = 0

USA captures Rolla Depot MO.
USA captures Springfield Depot MO.
CSA recaptures Springfield Depot MO.
CSA captures Bloomington MO.
USA captures Fayetteville Depot MO.

Lotsa action for our first turn!

Josh has spread CSA Price's force all over Missouri (regiment at Bloomington, Price with Weightman at Harrison MO, two regiments at Springfield Depot, and the powerful Campbell's Cavalry hot on my heels at Cass MO).
