Hobbes v Athena: In Blood and Fire

Sat Jul 14, 2012 6:32 pm

Image

Hi folks, I thought I would post a King Philip's War AAR against Athena rather than my usual opponent Carnium as it's such a small scenario and also because he beat me last time. I am playing the English against Athena's Indians. The scenario is playable as either side v AI or as PBEM. It should be available as a mod in the next few days if anyone would like to try it.

EDIT: Due to a forum change images in the AARs are now repeated. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to prevent this in older threads.

The main map area. The map extends slightly to include several Indian villages further to the north and New York to the south.

I've decided not to trust some of the local indians and demand their arms.

Thanks Ebb. I’m hoping to post the mod by next weekend.

Status after the first couple of months. Providence has been taken by Metacom (Athena) she plays a decent game in tests as either side
Strategic regions in the game will always maintain a structure of some kind. Objectives may change occasionally as the scenario progresses
It would be a nice improvement I think if you could see your opponents objectives

July 1675. Thomas Savage disperses Natick Indians in the Boston area before moving his militia to reinforce the town of Marlborough.
To the south, Cudworth makes a move towards Metacom's village at Mount Hope. Metacom meanwhile is rubuffed at Lancaster, but at a high cost to the townsfolk.

August 1675. Narragansett led by Canonchet join the uprising. The town of Hadely is destroyed before Canonchet turns his attention to the strategic town of Hartford
Image

Cudworth destroys Metacom’s village at Mount Hope. A stockade is constructed in the region
Image

Savage acts upon rumours of Nipmuck involvement in the uprising and attempts to destroy the village of Quabaug
A heavy defeat is inflicted by Muttawmp and his braves. Metacom moves away from the Lancaster region, to the relief of the besiged colonists

September 1675. Savage moves to relieve Hartford and succeedes in forcing Canonchet’s warriors from the region. Cudworth destroys the fortified Narragansett village. To the north the indians enjoy more success as Metacom burns York and Deerfield suffers a similar fate at the hands of Muttawmp. It seems that the Mohawk have been persuaded by Metacom to join the uprising, an unusual turn of events as they will usually remain neutral or give their support to the English

Close so far (well done Athena!)

October 1675. Lancaster falls to Muttawmp and to the north Metacom destoys farmsteads around Casco bay. It’s not going well for the English

November 1675. The English start to fight back. Canonchet suffers a large number of casualties at Hartford as Savage launches an aggressive assault to clear the region of natives. Cudworth succeeds where Savage had failed and the Nipmuck village of Quabaug is raised. Blockhouses are built to secure the region. Many of the Christian Indians from the praying towns are finally allowed to fight alongside the settlers. But just as the tide appears to be turning Muttawmps’ raid against Marlborough results in yet more English casualties and the destruction of the town

December 1675. A quiet turn as English forces move to winter quarters. Metacom is still causing mischief to the north and the fort at Pemaquid is destroyed

January 1676. While my forces are in their winter quarters the indians still make progress. Not sure if I should brave the winter and take the fight to them.
I'll give it another month. Metacom finds a spirited defence from the hardy traders at the Clarke and Lake trading post but Mount Hope is once again in indian hands.

March 1676. I've skipped a turn as there is not much action but the Indians continue to harass the English settlements
Newport and the Clarke and Lake trading post fall to indian attack

May 1676. Still fairly quiet so I have skipped another turn. The weather has now improved so I will be on the march again soon.
Meanwhile there is trouble elsewhere (flavour event only)

June 1676. Uncas joins the fight on the side of the English; Better late than never. Savage heads to Mount Hope while Cudworth readies his force for an attack on the other remaining English objective of Peskeompskut. Metacom finally comes south and makes an attempt for the strategic region of Plymouth

Athena still enjoys a healthy lead

July 1676. A change of plan sees Savage attempting to link up with Uncas at Bassoqutoquag. Unfortunately Metacom and Canonchet seem to get wind of the move and arrive in time to greet the English force. The remains of Savage’s troop limps toward the sanctuary of Hartford

Cudworth fails to take Peskeompskut but his force extracts a high price from the indian defenders

Scenario looks good for small but good skirmish. Hope to play it.
Thanks.

I like it.

I also love your "historical events", with "*" in front of them. Way to learn history, and have the feel of an era (like in your King William, or Pontiac's, scenarios).

I know that Chris worked relentlessly hours and hours to have this scenario done right and it shows! When you say 'well done Athena', it is in no small part because of the guidance you provided to 'her' with AI scripting...

By the way, that would be awesome if we could talk with you about AI in the new game AJE, Bohémond is scripting her and he can use some help I believe!

Happy to give any advice wanted – but I have no secret knowledge.
Mainly testing over and over and tweaking until she does what she is told :D

September 1676. The English enjoy a fair lead and only one objective remains. Back to Mount Hope!
Image

Cudworth prepares to assault the last indian stronghold. The English probably have too many Indians allied to them although this differs per game due to player options and events.
I will rebalance slightly before releasing

October 1676. I was hoping to post my final picture upon Metacom's death.
Unfortunately he was to be found to the North attempting to gain the support of the Ammoscoggin and Sako tribes.
Image

I was denied a major victory as Cudworth spent the final turn inactive and so was unable to launch an assault against Mount Hope.
Image

It is possible that the scenario can last a further year if certain events fire. Hopefully it will have a fair bit of replayability and seems well suited to play as either side or PBEM. I'll make a few adjustments and fix a small bug (captives should have been recovered as they were not killed by the indians) + Uncas' gorget is a bit early I think :bonk: so I will change the graphic. Hopefully release very soon.

Cheers,
Chris

Footnote. I found the missing captive event - it was displayed twice to the Indian side instead of once to each side.
I have also realised that a bug in the event gave me 21 VP more than I should have received (I thought the VP changed very rapidly in the last couple of turns!).
So I still won - but only by 1 VP!

Footnote2. Just realised I actually received 22 VP more than I should have. So it was actually a draw!
I'll fix this and then release the mod.

Nice one, now what about playing the other side?

Are the Indians following a scripted strategy by the way?

Could do - but the sun is actually shining for once so I better go out and enjoy it for a few days first!
No scripting of strategy in any of the scenarios I have made.

Cheers,
Chris

It seems a great shame that every time the forums are changed things get messed up with old posts. The first change led to duplicate images and the next - only the duplicates remain! :crying:

All things come to an end I suppose.

Ah sorry about that... I know this can be demotivating, but we are still there. The old forum was dying from overbloating and it was mandatory to move... even if it means losing options and images, URL.

I see on the contrary 2017 as the revival of Ageod, sort off, with 2 third parties games (ECW and WSS) and the new engine coming along nicely :)
