Naval support in land combat...

From what I recall about the war, the Continentals wanted to retake Newport but wouldn't attempt it without support from the French Navy (support which was denied) - because of the presence of British ships.

Can the British Fleet be used in a similar manner?

Same goes for New York which was essentially an island.
