Artillery losses and replacement

Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:09 pm

I noteced it's quite hard to replace Artillery losses during NCP campaigns.

I suggest, it's my opinion and we could discuss over it, a couple of issues.

1. During Napoleon Age battles was common practice to replace gunner losses drawing men from infantry units: reserve or infantry units committed to protect support artillery battery.
The major factor limiting artillery efficienty on the field was ammunition supply.

2. Major artillery losses were suffered from loosing battles, when artillery pieces were captured by the enemy: on the contrary captured guns were soon and easely included in units.

3. During battles guns were often lost by enemy cavalry actions: cavalrymen were used to stick nails within enemy guns left on the field by flying gunners seeking cover from enemy charge. Cavalrymen hammered nails deep within guns disabling them for the battle........But that same guns could be recovered to full operativity soon after the battle conclusion.

As a result, I suggest to manage gun unit losses in a different way:

a. Artillery battery should not suffer from attrition.
b. Captured guns should used to replenish artillery units for the capturing side.
