NCP GRANDCAMPAIGN ISSUES: suggestions

Thu Apr 17, 2008 12:54 pm

I collected down here some issues that could help with GrandCampaign

Diplomacy
I assume it will not be a trouble to manage the diplomatic aspects: Philippe Thibault did a superb work with Europa Universalis** series.

Royal Marriage
This issue is part of Europa Universalis series, too.

Bonaparte Family
This is a unique aspect that need to be represent in a Napoleonic Age Game.
Napoleon's sisters & brothers got crowns in many French Allied states.
Some of Napoleon's sisters went married to French Marshalls allowing them to a quick career, or being raised to thrones: see Murat, later King of Naples. That did not always result into an increased Marshalls loyalty to Napoleon: Murat enjoyed Coalition side in the 1814 Campaign.

Leaders Loyalty
Leaders switching side in the middle of a campaign was a possible event during Napoleonic age.
I also true, some Napoleonic Age Generals were a kind of mercenaries serving foreing nations.
Some other ones were envolved in complex political events leading them to switch sides. Former French Marshall Bernadotte is an example: see his 1813 & 1814 Campaigns against France leading Sweeden Army.

French economical embargo against Britain & English Blockade.
It self mandatory these two features need to be simulated.

Truce & Armistice
Local truces were sometimes signed between opposing forces commanders: especially during the Peninsular War.
During the campaign of Germany, 1813, opponents agreed over armistice after few weeks of fighting: during the Armistice both sides redeployed and reinforced own armies.
Rules for Armistice have been detailed into "AH's Struggle of Nations boardgame".

Peace Treaty
This aspect has been developed and detailed into Europa Universalis series.

Units production
Armies have to been rebuilt up following a campaign losses.
New units are to be added to National OOB over time.

Winter Quarters
Napoleon Age armies were used to enter Winter Quarters when season was worsening to reduce attrition losses.
In the winter 1806-07 French army was forced to leave Winter Quarters by the Russian winter offensive in Eastern Prussia and Poland.
AH's War & Peace boardgame details Winter Quarters rules.

Elba Exile & Emperor's return
It's mandatory we need rules for that.

Coalition Armies Organization
It's an aspect of paramount importance: French victories in early Coalition Wars was dictated by the superior French Army Organization.
Advantages from the French Divisional and Corps organization are clearly visible in "Sun of Austerlitz" NCP scenery: compare the high efficiency of Grand Armee Corps to the low performance of the Armee d'Italie with a poor Corps organization.

Coalition Powers had their Armies organized over Frederick the Great Army in early Coalition Wars.
Russia started reforming Army Organization following the 1805 defeat.
Prussia begun reorganizing national Army over the French model following the 1806-07 defeat.
Austria Army was reorganized after the 1809 defeat.
Coalition Armies reorganization inspired to the French Army model was a quite long process.
It was only by 1813 that Coalition Armies achieved an efficiency close to that of French Grand Armee.
"SPI La Grand Armee" OOBs figures out Major Powers doctrine in Army Organization in relationships to Coalition Wars.

Powers Inner Policy
Coalition Powers Inner Policy was an element, even not the only one, influencing hostility or sympathy for France & Napoleon.
This aspect is finely represented in Tolstoj's War & Peace, as regard Russian Society: it's just an example.
France Inner Policy major aspect we have to deal with is the opposition to Napoleon Regime.
Royalists & Republicans opposed to Napoleon Empire: Napoleon escaped to many attempt to kill him during his life.
In 1812 Napoleon was forced to leave Grand Armee command & fly to Paris by rumors over a coup d'etat in Paris trigged by speculative news that the Emperor was dead in Russia.
In 1814 Napoleon fall was trigged by French Marshalls opposition.

** : Have Great expectation over Europa Universalis: Rome!!

One thing missing from Europa Euniversalis is the ability to form client kingdoms like: Northern Italy; Spain under Joseph; Westphalia; Naples; Holland; Duchy of Warsaw; Confederation of the Rhine (sort of).

A Grand Campaign must have the ability to do this, and provide for recruiting of units from the Client Kingdoms.
