City of Split on Adriatic coast

Tue Oct 19, 2010 4:38 pm

I have noticed that on NCP map Split is presented like small Indian village. In the time of Napoleon it was probably the most fortified city in the world with double walls. In addition there was large fort (fort Gripe) with similar kind of walls on the hill top within the cannon shot range from the city. Nearby there was another fort, seven castles and fortified town of Trogir surrounded by mote on 1 side and by the sea on other 3.
In attachment is the simulation of how the city of Split had looked like at the beginning of 19th century. The painting of Roman emperor Diocletian palace is also attached which walls are visible behind the main outer walls in the simulation.

The main and most beautiful street in the old town leading from NW bastion to the sea still bears the name of Napoleons Marshall Marmont (Marmont Street) who ordered the outer walls to be dismantled after French army had entered the city thus creating the street. Split was Marmonts center of government for Illryan provinces.

Today only one bastion remains intact with portions of walls and other bastions. Fort Gripe is preserved intact and today it's a naval museum with two large naval canons and captured anchor from English war frigate (forgot the name) from Napoleons era at the entrance. Diocletians palace is one of the most preserved Roman monuments and declared UNESCO heritage.
