"Failed to initialise DirectX Audio. DirectX 8 may not be installed"....

Tue Aug 19, 2008 7:33 am

....is the message I get every time I try to start the game. Followed by "Runtime error 216 at 00403DEE". Additional details are as follows:

Problem signature:

All of which could as well be in Linear B in terms of intelligibility. This is under Windows Server 2008, on which I've so far had no problems with any other games. Compatibility modes make no difference either.

Can this be resolved at all?

Hi Belfaborac; sorry to hear you are having problems with the game.

Can you provide us with a dxdiag logfile? Here's how to get it:

  • Click on the Windows Start button, then on Run.
  • Then type 'DxDiag'.
  • Once you are in the utility, run all the tests, then choose to save the results into a file (on your desktop for example).
  • This is the file we need; either attach it to a post here, or send it to support@ageod.com (along with the error message you have quoted above)

Will do, no problem - and thanks for the swift reply! Sometime later though, as I'm on my way to bed after a night shift. :cuit: (not sure what that smiley means, but I couldn't find one that says "I'm really, really tired"...)

Ahhhh, another day...eh, night...awaits! Please find DxDiag.txt enclosed below. Hope there's an answer in there somewhere, as the game looks positively yummy!

I looked over it, but couldn't see anything "obvious"; the drivers are fairly up-to-date and no other things that caught my eye.

Going back to your first, I see you're using Windows server 2008; I can't say I've heard of anyone running NCP on it, but I haven't heard of anyone not running NCP on it either :)

In short; I'm afraid I don't know what is the cause of your problem; someone more knowledgable about it should be along shortly

In your Napoleon's campaigns installation folder you should have

D3DX81AB.DLL

Deleting it I get another error, just "could not load..."

But check it just in case

Besides another DirectX file was needed? Try this solution too

The file is indeed there and I've also already tried the other prospective solution without any change to my sad predicament. Does this mean I'm well and truly stuck, or is there still hope of a cure?

"By the way, very nice PC"

Thanks; I must confess I'm quite happy with it. ;-) I ought to be, considering what it cost me....

I'm unsure that Windows Server with DirectX10 provide legacy support for DirectX8 and 9. To check that, can you run again DxDiag. Go to the third tab, 'display'. You should see a button named 'Test Direct 3D' (I'm in French version, so the button's caption can vary slightly). Then click on it.

Windows will check, with a rotating cube, if you are DirectX 7, 8, 9 compliant. Do not abort the test, wait for it to finish. Tell us how it went.

BTW, I see you are using "Norwegian (Bokmål)" on your machine; a fine choice for localization, if I ever saw one :D

Pocus: I think it's most likely to be an issue with the legacy support as well tbh. I cleverly deduced this after finding that DxDiag has no option to check for such support at all under S2008. :-) No "Test Direct3D" option, no green cube any longer. I've downloaded the latest DirectX redistributable, which states compatibility with S2008, so now I only need the courage to install it and see if it solves the problem, or breaks the whole system. I might just do a backup first I guess....

Rafiki: it's a great localization for sure and in my opinion everyone should use it. In fact, I fail to see why the other ones are included at all. :-)

Fredrikstad by the way. ;-)

Well bugger... Updating DX did nothing to alleviate my pains unfortunately. Still the same fault message as in the OP.

Sorry to hear about that Belfaborac... Aside from a refund if you bought it online from us, I don't see much of a 'solution', if a refund is a solution...

What a bummer.... :( Actually I've been on nights ever since I bought it and have only had a look at things in short fits and spurts, so I'll give it the weekend at least when I can put in a more concentrated effort. If neither google nor my brain comes up with a workable solution, I'll take you up on the refund after that. I could of course install Vista and dual boot, but realistically the extra bother is a bit too much and I'd never get around to playing the game anyway.

Would it be ok if I keep the game even after the refund however, just to play around with to see if there is a solution after all? Also, I guess you never know if a patch or some such thing might solve things somewhere down the line. Either way I would come back and report if such a thing should happen. Unlikely of course, but still - and if I no longer have the game I obviously can't check...

As your problem seems to be with audio, have you tried to update or reinstall your audio drivers?

Uh...audio? How do you figure that's the problem? In any case, I've neither updated or reinstalled those drivers, since as far as I'm aware they work just fine.

Pocus: will do, cheers.

Err... Well, it is the title of this thread you started

"Failed to initialise DirectX Audio. DirectX 8 may not be installed"....

I have searched "Failed to initialise DirectX Audio" and in several places, to update audio drivers was recommended

It's true that you can try editing the general.opt (in settings directory) and put a 0 for both music and sounds, to see what happen.

Sorry, I'm a dimwit.... Even more so than in general after 5 night shifts. :-/

However, the sound drivers are properly installed and I'm almost 100% sure that legacy DX support, or lack thereof, is the problem. DX9-based games are fine, but sadly I have no other games harking back to DX8, so I can't be 100% certain.

Tried that just now, but sadly it made no difference. :-(

Description: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Default Sound Playback: Yes
Default Voice Playback: Yes
Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0888&SUBSYS_10438260&REV_1000
Manufacturer ID: 1
Product ID: 100
Type: WDM
Driver Name: RTKVHD64.sys
Driver Version: 6.00.0001.5404 (English)

You have Realtek on board sound. You cannot download their drivers at Realtek homegape, they recommend the motherboard manufacturer site. At Asus site (you have a P5E WS Pro), these are the drivers listed. There are no drivers for Windows Server 2008 yet. You must be using the ones for Vista x64. Perhaps could be better the ones for Win2003? 5.10.0.5404, instead of 6.00.0001.5404 Other option is to check windows update, sometimes there are updated drivers, and would be specific for your new OS

Been busy, hence the lack of a reply. Thanks for the suggestion Nikel, I'll certainly try the S2003 drivers! No drivers S2008 in Windows Update as of yet and I'm not holding my breath while waiting for them either....
