River Art - and those 3d icons

Sat Nov 17, 2007 11:58 pm

Other comapny's games with "3d" icons have suffered from this issue - where it looks strange that two forces face each other but one has its back to the other player - just looks really odd.

The Talonsoft Campaign Series was one offender but you could rotate the pieces for aesthetics if you wanted to but that solution was a pain. Better if the system knew to do it for you.

As for the general graphics of the game, whilst I love the thought that has gone into it, I have noticed a problem with the river art that I once came across myself when creating a map for a game.

It looks like the artists have used an "internal shadow" filter to make the rivers look like they dig into the map. However, if looked at long enough, the eye plays a visual illusion an the rivers in fact look like they are above the terrain - like a raised road or blue spaghetti.

I think hand drawing the rivers is the solution, hand shadowing etc., and this is beyond my talent. But it does look odd in this game.

Hi Adam!
How long do I have to look at the map to reproduce this effect? My eyes are red and tears are running down my cheeks from staring... but the damned rivers don't want to rise above the map. :sourcil: :niark:

Cheers

draw a path in the direction you want it to face, then abort it.
