Evasion

Instead of combat or "all or nothing", why not tie to evasion?

If undetected, you can cross the river, and if detected halted.

They could evade and hit the landing fleet. All is takes is one. Having a large force covering the landing should be more than adequate to the task. If I have a big enough force to blockade, I should be able to land forces without having it negated by a single enemy vessel. It should also be possibl...

But when "disembarking", the ground forces seem to form a separate stack and then "move" to the destination region, so why is a second naval stack necessary? All is in the details, gents! Set the disembarking fleet passive and then the rest in offensive or even defensive, and the former should be sc...

I think it is an issue that needs to be addressed, as it allows defending key places from invasion by simply having a gunboat or brig in a key city such as New Orleans, Memphis, etc.., to effectively defend them from invasion. That means you can skip having to keep a substantial garrison without sig...

Seniority Penalty for not promoting

One thing that is currently done is that a leader is penalized seniority for not getting promoted. This means that a general is penalized for not being promoted even if he is nowhere near the senior or in a position where it would not be prudent operationally (I find switching division commanders in...

Cory, I think that I would of a mind for a rematch using the leader mod or better yet the Coming Fury mod. The CF mod really intrigues me as to the emphasis on getting early war piece to reflect the actual conditions. Harvey, if you like we can play again once you get back to the states. By the way,...

PBEM is a Blast

I jumped right into playing PBEM and never played against the AI. My first PBEM ended in a "draw" as the game file got corrupted. My second PBEM was against Runyan and truly an "educational" experience. I am a much improved player after getting "schooled", one of the reasons I continued the game int...

The Union side

Here are the three turns preceeding Thomas' Corps crossing the Cumberland. Thomas and Buell actually crossed at Gallatin Ferry, based on the turn plot. Thomas had been plotted to move across the Cumberland starting in Late March, but did move and cross until Early May, most likely due to gunboats pr...

As the aformentioned PBEM opponent, I will go back and load the turn that I plotted Thomas' corps move over the lower cumberland. (It is subjest to available time and the fact I have no internet connectivity in my hooch) If there is a naval presence there, the game will not allow plotting through a ...

The outcome of this battle is inline with what I would expect. In the attack, you need to have at least 2 to 1 odds if not more. Definitely more as mentioned above if the enemy is entrenched. With an adequate leader, you will need more forces, especially if the defending general is good (Milroy's 1 ...

I would say that your observation is more correct than you imagine....... One of the toughest (almost impossible) problem to solve is 'Peace'...without a diplomatic engine, a beaten Austria in 1805 would remain at war for instance, due to current engine limitation...scripting peace is a nightmare...

It essentially was an Army in it's own right. Only an option for a general or Marshal that was excpetionally talented. I had the pleasure of playing the role of Davout in a 15mm minature game of the Battle of the Fleches using Empire V (1 fig = 60 men). I was "pushing lead" of over 1,000 figs! Seein...

It seems to me that the losses are often "catastrophic" with the elements "dying to a man", hence not having a "container" to place the replacements into. I find after a losing combat that an "infantry Division" no longer has any infantry in it and cannot get the replacements. That is my assessment ...

Agree with GSHOCk, but I will add that the game engine using a wego format with an emphasis on leadership is execptional. The depth without being overly difficult to play of the games so far is outstanding. The "feel" and look great, and I have enjoyed BoA and ACW like no other games I have played. ...

I only play against human opponents, but believe the AI to be a somewhat important part of good game design. It is critical for having the comuter handle and manage tasks "competently" so the player is not required to micromanage. This allows depth to the game without undue complication. On the flip...

As already mentioned, Chandler's is a must read for any serious Napoleonic era student. I also second the recommendation on Petre. I am not sure about that. If a subordinate leader is tasked to take a mission and the commander departs, I would believe that the current leader activation combined with the "out of command" penatlies would be sufficient to represent the command and control issues. It would be the newly arrived lead...

Senior Commander "in Charge"

There is a fix for that: Any combat in a region automatically falls under command of the senior commander inf outside the corps/Army command construct. If the combat is offensive and the leader not activated, then the command orders would revert to defense and combat would not take place. The idea t...
