Good point, 1stvermont , about a very early intervention perhaps preventing the war. I think it very unlikely, though. What could the European powers, in fact, have done to affect the war? As pgr stated, both England and France had huge commitments elsewhere. Their foreign policy goal was not to fig...

All that said, I'm not sure what I think should be happening. My gut feeling is that we are being too sensitive, but also that we are too slow to speak out when we see racism and white supremacy in others. As usual, a thoughtful and literate post, tripax . Please excuse me for only quoting the last...

We both know it was a lot more complicated than that. Tariffs were stifling the Southern economy. Control of Congress was slipping away and with it the ability to steer the nation the way some Southerners wanted. Lincoln set about a war to restore the Union by force, not to free blacks from slavery....

Lee always believed that Davis was the best choice for the job, or at least said so. But then, he was raised in a culture of military subservience to civilian authority. I think my country lost a lot of things in the Civil War, but at least we didn't lose that. If the South had structured a governme...

Hey, tripax, you're right. I was going to post a ringing endorsement of Stauffenberg's views, which would probably have been a waste of time.

Stauffenberg, I didn't know Lee and Grant ever met after the war. I'd like to hear more about that.

I don't normally use paraphrases, especially in a forum with such learned members, but I can't find an exact source. So... Col. E. Porter Alexander to Gen. Cavalry had these guns and most Union cavalry could barely ride their horses. That was your original question, before the thread derai...

From Nosworthy, Brent. 2003. The Bloody Crucible of Courage . In late 1862, Springfield rifle muskets cost $18.50 in quantity (wish I could get one for that). Sharps, Colt and other breechloading rifles ran $42.50 - $45. The Union could have afforded it, but the Confederacy had neither the means to ...

What Pocus has provided is not a patch, but a replacement for the CW2.exe file. Uncompress the downloaded file on your desktop with WinZip, 7-Zip or whatever utility you prefer. You get a file called CW2.exe. Don't click on it. Go to your AGEod CW2 directory (in my case C:/Games/Civil War 2). In tha...

Gray Fox keeps posting about armies being trapped. That's not what anyone is objecting to. Of course, if your retreat is cut off you have to attack to escape. If you lose a battle and have a valid retreat route, it's absurd for the game to make you continue to attack by changing your posture to off...

All right then. I attack Richmond and lose. But I get an automatic 5% MC, so I dig in and Richmond is now under siege. Like what happened at Petersburg in June, 1864? I think AndrewKurtz has the right of it. Force offensive posture upon first entering a region with less than 5% military control, bu...

Yes, if we ignore all of military history and focus exclusivley on the four years of the CW, then we can ignore any other reality. Unless it happened within our shores and between April 1861 and April 1865, it just wasn't possible. I assume this part of your post was aimed at me. The game is suppos...

The problem is, nothing like the described mechanic actually happened during the war. No army ever beat itself to death with repeated attacks when it had an open path of retreat. The only time a field army surrendered by necessity (leaving aside sieges, where the commander let himself be trapped) wa...

Yes, that's the way Gray Fox plays and more power to him. It would never occur to me to put CSA merchant ships in the shipping box because I know it defeats the blockade mechanics. If you're into PBEM, agree on a house rule. I'll have to rely on self-control and hope the next patch fixes the problem.

When Gray Fox first advocated this idea of an artillery division, which if I understand his last post he got from pgr , I scoffed. At times, neither can I. By all accounts I've read, Forrest didn't drink, though I seem to remember a reference to him taking a nip when a surgeon had to dig a pistol ball out of his back.

As to that car, no true Southern man would ever give a car that name.
