Very nice, I like the idea. The links you have provided are already useful, even if they don't make it into the game.

To choose between McPherson and Foote depends on your own tastes. I'll take McPherson, because of his more scholarly approach. Foote is writing fiction, for the most part. Currently I'm reading Porter Alexander's Personal Recollections . Though obviously biased in approach, Alexander's work is bett...

The fact that the war lasted 4 years proves that there was a serious problem. I've always wondered when I see statements like this exactly how long it should have taken the Union to suppress the rebellion. 90 days? I think it should have taken 8 years, which means that the Union did very very well,...

1862 scenario as the Union. I like the idea of having major forces already organized.

Will try the earlier scenarios as Union at some point.

Wilhammer, I understand what you're getting at, but why not then just dispense with the light damage entirely? Would a light force be able to put a RR line out of commission for two weeeks or more? I really don't know. Excessive and unrealistic cavalry raiding was one of the game breakers for the ol...

Although I have to agree with Czrasai that I don't want to see variable railroad damage represented in the game, Crimguy does make an interesting point. By 1864 the Union could repair rail lines almost as quickly as Confederate raiders could destroy them.

I agree that Sears is a great read, that his books are always backed by solid research, and that he provides a fresh analysis to events. For an example of the latter, read his book on Chancellorsville. Hooker does not come off quite as badly as the "traditional" story would have us believe.

Here is a screenie of Ben Huger. He formed a division 3 turns ago. Look at his rating....it is at 0-0-0. Likewise Jeb Magruder is 1-0-2. I am sure they were not rate this poorly before I made the division.... Don't play as the Union much do you? I would kill to have generals that good. :niark: On t...

Thanks for the information about the western armies McNaughton. I inadvertently fell into the "Virginia-centric" mentality. Shame on me, since I should know better. If we want to be historical then the Union should be able to form divisions and corps earlier than the Confederacy. McDowell's force was not a mess at 1st Bull Run. It was much better organized than Beauregard's force. The former had five organized divisions, while the latter had two independent for...

... It's just lucky for the Union, to paraphrase Lincoln, that both armies were green together. If the army that marched to Manassas had met anything but another green army, it would have only taken one quick battle most likely.... And vice versa of course. Foote is the better story.

I don't really mind the system as is. In my opinion the one thing that would help would to be able to designate one or two cities in each state as muster centers. All reinforcements except militia would show up in these cities.

Hi Queeg, I understand what you're saying, but it does raise some interesting questions. This is an excellent idea for a thread. Many seemingly little changes are being made to the game which may add up enough to significantly alter play balance. In South Carolina, Camden is a strategic city. Wouldn't it make more sense to have Columbia, one area over, to be the strategic city in this vicinity?
