Royalist victory vs Athena

http://i68.tinypic.com/2i2hxi.jpg Save your congratulations, I don't deserve them—it was a Minor Victory on points, and that after many unsuccessful starts, switching AI from Colonel to Lieutenant and from Hard to Normal Activation Bonus and, in this game, reversing bad outcomes on two occasions. I...

Thanks, ERISS; I am coming around to similar conclusions. Eastern Whites have less offensive oomph than Western but more staying power in the long run, so should favour the defense, while the Western Whites have a lot more punch early on. But my idea of winning is taking Moscow (and not recognizing ...

I still can't pull off a viable Eastern White strategy (possibly because I'm playing against myself) - it seems close cooperation between Eastern and Western White factions is the key to victory, which makes sense. Do most people play with activation off, as the manual recommends? I always played wi...

I've learned this bug only affects the hotkey Shift-R - if I click on 'Move by rail' in the UI the rail pool updates correctly.

Rail pool icon not reflecting used transport capacity

When I load troops on trains, this is not reflected in the rail pool icon at the top of the screen. Conscripts and war supplies go down when I order new units/replacements, but the rail pool does not update to reflect used capacity, which is frustrating. It would also be handy if the tooltip showed ...

Game crashes when zooming out

Whenever I start a new game, I get a CTD when I zoom out using the mouse scroll wheel. I always switch to military control map mode first, not sure if that has anything to do with it. I'm playing the steam version of RUS Gold 1.01c on Windows 8.1 64bit (6.3, build 9600), AMD A-10 5800K APU, AMD Rade...

Cool, thanks for the replies, guys! It sounds like most people play the GC, so I guess I'll practice for that. Playing the Western Whites does get a bit claustrophobic when a Red player focuses on them early, so I suppose I shouldn't feel so bad for doing poorly with them my first couple tries again...

Best scenario for balanced PBEM?

I seem to recall people saying that the Grand Campaign was almost impossible for a Red player to win against a competent White player(s) (which didn't stop me from getting my butt kicked my first couple tries in PBEM). Is this still the case in the Gold version? The Short Campaign ("Red Spring", May...

They might give you an advantage in combat/retreat rolls if they are intercepted (especially if they have the blockade runner ability), but in terms of resources, I don't think they add anything to the amount of money and war supplies coming in. I would keep blockade runners separated, in passive po...

McClellan not given command of the AotP?

Why isn't George McClellan put in command of the Army of the Potomac by event as he was in AACW? The event appears to be more or less the same, except that he is not automatically promoted, and of course there is no incentive to do so manually. Is this WAD? I am using the latest public beta, 1.05 RC9.

Yes, that was a weird way to phrase it. Heh, that's a good analogy. The AI really is hopeless at the moment, much worse than in AACW, and even then I had to play the CSA in the 1864 scenario before I was even remotely challenged by the AI. My first time out of the gate with CW2, I annihilated the C...

I should probably add, this is based on my experience with encirclements in AACW - perhaps they made it harder in CW2, but I would expect the same general principles apply. Forces in adjacent regions will not always prevent retreat, but if total destruction is your aim, it is necessary to have at le...

I believe it is WAD, yes. It is very difficult to destroy entire stacks, which is as it should be - it's hard to pull off a kesselschlacht without panzers, but it is by no means impossible - I've pulled it off a number of times against the AI and a couple times against human opponents, but it takes ...

Yes, as Durk indicated, the Revolution is by no means inevitable - just, you know, don't lose basically. I like playing the EE because the field is wide open for manoeuvre warfare and the quantity-over-quality aspect presents some unique challenges and of course a quality all its own. The major drawbacks for me are the lack of diplomatic influence and limited naval options, and the fact that the AI doe...

1) Don't worry too much about Germany, France should be in no immediate danger of collapse. Austria is the weakest link, focus on her. 2) Linking up with Serbia might be a long term goal, sure. The Berlin plan is probably the best in terms of activated areas, but I'd be prepared to abandon the Polish salient west of Warsaw if the CP player attempts to cut it off in a massive pincers movement. You'll also impact overcapacity on all combats units in case of a battle. So that's not a great tactical decision. I don't understand - I often put air units in fortresses for their command and artillery bonuses - are you saying besieged units will actually perform worse in combat despite the advan...

What Kensai said. It increases the chances of retreat before battle but gives a combat penalty otherwise, so it's risky near the front, but I constantly use it for small cavalry raids/patrols, and to separate damaged units into structures for speedy recovery. I also set units under construction to p...
