Some were afraid that we would pay a heavy price eventually for not extending liberty to all. Unfortunately, they were right. The American genius for compromise, for living with each other amidst disagreements, failed in 1861. Every drop of blood raised by the lash of a master was paid for with one...

You're right. I'm sorry if I offended you. I've made it plain why I'm unhappy with this game. Lodilefty said shut up, so I'm shutting up. I'll come back in 6 months to see if it's fixed. Have a nice life.

This sort of grousing comes off as rather amusing to those of us hardened old grognards, who were playing TSS on folding tables in someone's basement when some of the critics here were still eating their food from little glass jars, and who have been playing the game PBEM with a great deal of satis...

ACW is not broken. It is very playable. That's what people say when it works as a game, but not as a simulation. I'm not here to argue with fanboys. If it gets fixed, I'll play it. Otherwise, like so many other games that have gone on and off my hard drives over the years, it will end up in the bit...

Whilst Im sure everyone appreciates the difficulties with managing more than one game patch, I also think that people, having paid money for the game like myself have a right to know whats going on with a game which has been waiting a long time for this final patch it seems. I don't want to play a ...

I voted for Stuart, but it's inevitable that Burnside will win the poll. Longstreet had a pretty good thicket, too. Personally, I've always liked Grant's neatly trimmed beard (not the spade-shaped one he wore at Belmont) and relatively short hair; very distinguished. In the Mexican-American War it w...

I agree with sideburns. I'm not so sure about hooker. That term for a "lady of the evening" was in use well before the Civil War, though I suppose Joseph H. and his reported (reputed?) lifestyle helped embed it in the lexicon. By the way, I think he gets a bad rap when it comes to Union generals. He...

Sherman, for sure. Perhaps Adm. Farragut. I'm not sure contemporary Americans who haven't studied the war really associate Custer with it.

That was hilarious. At the risk of sounding dense, why would anyone make an anti Beauregard cartoon? Because in the 20th century it became popular to make fun of the South and it's "Lost Cause" mythology. Lee and Jackson were off limits and the average Yankee only knew the name of one other Souther...

The ACW takes up all the space in western history books, but the death toll for the Taipeng Rebellion was 20,000,000. Yes, twenty million. (!) Yes , but most of those were civilian casualties, whereas in the ACW most were military. I've seen civilian casualties in the South estimated at 50,000, muc...

I like the portraits - after awhile, even if you don't who that unfriendly face was, you say to yourself, "Watch out, he's a good one for them," or "Don't worry too much, this guy's a nincompoop." The latter applies to the Union, mostly, although the South has a few - it seems the South's incompete...

I think I'd rather stick with a representation of the world as it was, not as the cartographers of the time thought it was. Joe Hooker relied on period maps, and you see where it got him. It got him on the flank and rear of Lee's army. It's not the map's fault he didn't know what to do next. :confu...

Hi, I'm new here. No matter what I try to do (except search) I get an error message saying I'm not allowed to do it. I was born in Chester (north central SC) but never resided there. I've lived the last 40+ years in central NC, the nearest map reference being Pittsboro (which I'll defend to the last).

Wow, I finally got a post through! I'm new here, and getting "accredited" to post is like pulling teeth. :bonk:

How do I play solo?

I'm new to AGEOD games and would like to play a few turns against myself to get a handle on the game mechanics before I tackle the French and Indian War campaign. I did a search but came up empty, so I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a quick explanation or point me toward a thread. Thanks!
