Good point, BigDuke66. It is true that there was a lot of hatred in Poland for the major powers who had partitioned Poland out of existence in the 1790s. Hatred of Russia was especially intense, so it's hard to imagine Poland as a loyal Russian puppet. But I think that the Poles would have fought fo...

I always preferred a 1792-1802 game to an 1805-1815 game (love those revolutionary generals and Suvorov).

Count me in for a 1792 mod.

IMHO it should start in April 1792, like the 1792 mod for Empires in Arms (the classic boardgame). That would include the Russo-Polish war in 1792!

Play balance will be an issue because France will start MUCH weaker. Russia will also be weaker and Austria MUCH stronger.

Most important is the option to create an independent Poland, that either Austria, Prussia, Russia (or even Turkey or France) can exercise if they control Warsaw and 3+ Polish provinces. Whichever major power backed an independent Poland would win the undying loyalty of the Poles and get some excell...

I find the the most prominent issue with this is that the retreating stack is retreating into a region into which it could not move, because of ZOC, were it not being retreated into it. I don't think this should be allowed. +1 This is the issue for 1.04. If you are playing against Athena as the CSA...

There is no doubt that the game can be different from real life. Of course, some of the fun is trying to achieve "what if" scenarios like "what if Lee's army had been caught and destroyed North of the Potomac" (after Antietam) or "what if McClellan's army had been trapped and destroyed" (during the ...

(At the risk of sounding like too much of a fanboy, the care and attention that is being put into this issue by the developers and the community as a whole is really impressive!) Wow! What thoughtful and great posts from this community. I will definitely stick with 1.04 for the moment until this is...

How do CW2 fans feel about battles of annihilation?

First, all hail to Pocus for his fine work on the latest beta patch. I just want to confirm that the newest beta patch is partly designed to stop battles of annihilation, and ask some questions about such battles. I am referring to battles in which entire divisions or corps are wiped out. Playing ar...

Thanks for looking into this. Next time -- if there is a next time -- I will document better. I no longer have the files on the very first crash to desktop. It occurred right at the end of turn processing, after everything else had happened, right before the game was about to display the next turn. ...

Also had a crash with the latest beta. Crash on closing. Game seems to have become unstable, seems to be loading two "Master Files." Entrenchment icons no longer showing properly. Union AI seems to be behaving very strangely, sending its armies away from the front instead of toward it. Would attach ...

In my experience, Straight Arrow, Athena likes to go for your rear areas. What you describe as a 1-2 punch is one way of doing this. Amphibiously or not, Athena likes to attack in several different places with a lot of small(er) forces to get you to disperse your own forces. In Virginia, Athena alwa...

This is fun. I would give myself 4/2/6, with entrencher and skirmisher abilities. I play pretty cautiously and carefully.

I'm like Longstreet -- my goal is always to get the enemy to hurl himself at my entrenched positions and get blasted.

That's a good point, Gray Fox, but I think the game should model this situation with loss of cohesion. As you say, "this cannot be portrayed on the game map." If the enemy gets in your rear, your army loses cohesion (gets totally disorganized) trying to get back (obliquely) to its line of communicat...

Fair enough ohms_law. But indeed the problem is that entire corps are getting wiped out, whether Athena's or the players. Just want to say again that, in addition to game play issues, this is NOT good from a historical point of view -- that is, it does not properly simulate the Civil War. If you wan...

Don't get me wrong. I think the path game has ventured in 1.05. is the right one, but this issue has to be looked into. I don't want simply to revert to 1.04, I want to make 1.05. work as it should :) +1 The Holy Grail would be more logical retreats (back down your line of communications, essential...

Sorry if my first post was intemperate. Have had a chance to calm down. Re retreats, once you have studied what the retreat parameters are, you can indeed plan around them, and they become part of playing this (great) game. What is odd is when a battle occurs in a region which is NOT adjacent to a c...

I see the retreat issue has been raised before

First of all, AACW is a great game!! As has been said, it doesn't need a lot of fixing. Not sure I'm qualified to give my wish list for AACW2, as my experience with AACW is still limited: have beaten the AI on VPs playing the Bull Run and Gettysburg scenarios, and am winning an April 1861 Campaign G...
