What is the optimal/recommended setting for solo play? Also, what's a good, easy scenario to learn to play (besides tutorials, including the DLC)?

I'm thinking of buying game from AGEOD, it's between AJE and this. I'd rather play WW1, but not if it's a buggy, incompatible mess. Anyone tried it on Windows 8 and with quad-core? What should I be aware of and will I need to download patches/programs to get it working?
